Recently I enjoyed a wonderful tour of Longears Safehouse -- a terrific nonprofit that rescues and rehabilitates donkeys, mules, and hinnies. The care and love that Dorothea Lotter and volunteers have for these beautiful animals is evident. Treat yourself to a heart warming experience and contact them for a tour! You will not regret it!
I never thought I would own a donkey.,much less fall in love with her. Considering some of the awful things that happen to these misunderstood creatures. Mercedes/AkA Ms Sexy,I would never have let her go,if I had not found, The Longears Safehouse. It is clean and spacious and the Donkeys are well taken care of.Dorthea owner/managers rehoming referrals are excellent. The Donkeys needs are well taken care of. Ms. Sexy/now Mercedes, lives inedgewood with new companions and her owner Tanya, who sends pics and keeps me in touch on how she's doing. Thank you Dorthea/Tanya and my friend Vicki and her friend Molly who found the longears Safehouse for me. A top rated place. I recommend it 100%
The owner, Dorothea, and her helpful volunteers do an outstanding job caring for donkeys that are either looking for homes or in their sanctuary. They feed and house them so they are safe and well. They will provide transportation for your donkey if necessary. Their approach is direct and gentle and they provide immediate positive feedback for good behaviour. A woman took one of my donkeys then couldn’t keep him after about 5 months. Fortunately she brought him to Longears Safehouse, and not a day too soon. Obviously he had not been well cared for and Dorothea made sure he was taken care of appropriately. I visited him last week and got a HUGE bray and a full heart. Thank you Dorothea and your volunteers.
The Longears Safehouse is a wonderful resource for our New Mexico community. I had adopted a mother and daughter burro who lived with me and my horses for about three years. The mama burro was very shy and cautious around people and she needed to learn to trust so she could be handled by the vet, the farrier and others needing to work around her. Dorothea agreed to work on her rehabilitation at the Safehouse and had made progress, but the proper process was slow and time consuming. During that period, I got a health condition that limited my physical capabilities, and sadly I had to give up the idea of bringing mama and baby back to my home. However, I know they are happy being among the other burros. They are getting lots of loving, excellent care and attention to their needs. I am truly grateful to the Safehouse for being there when I really needed assistance, for agreeing to take them in, for giving them a new home where they can flourish and where I can visit them as I can. Thank you Dorothea, your volunteers and all the other supporters of The Longears Safehouse.
I have volunteered to clean stalls and although it is hard work, it is so worth it. Interacting with these magnificent creatures is so rewarding. The owner, Dorothea, is the hardest working woman I have ever met because of her love for each and every one of them. I really admire and respect her so much!
I have been a volunteer with The Longears Safehouse for two years. During that time, I have seen firsthand the amazing work Dorothea Lotter, the executive director, performs each and every day to care for the donkeys within her charge. She is attentive to each donkey’s unique physical and behavioral needs. And she performs her work with grace and compassion amid continual challenges of running a rescue.
I own three donkeys, so am familiar with their needs. I follow several non profit donkey organizations and have found Longears Safehouse to be transparent in their dealings, with adoptions and intakes, with their needs for operation, with their training methods, and other activities. I highly recommend they be considered for your highest rating. Thank you.
The Longears Safehouse provides a safe and caring home for many donkeys - Dorothea Lotter- the executive director- has decades of expertise with donkeys and mules and freely shares it to improve the lives of all donkeys and donkey owners. I have adopted several donkeys from the Safehouse and I continue to receive support and encouragement as a donkey owner- they are an amazing resource.
A lovely, important, and much-needed sanctuary! Donkeys are such tender creatures and it was a joy to get to learn more about them, be around them, and help tidy the space.
