The Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington (JGSGW) was established as a non-profit society in 1980. In 1982, 1988, 1995, 2003 and 2011, JGSGW was the host society for the annual conference of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS).
Our membership is primarily from Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Meetings are generally held monthly on a
Sunday, 8 – 10 times a year. Meeting content includes guest lectures, movies, and panel discussions on stimulating subjects to those interested in genealogy.
JGSGW has a long history of performing research projects for the benefit of the genealogical community. Projects have included indexing of records of the State Department, local area cemeteries and funeral homes. The current research project is to index the Jews buried in Arlington National Cemetery. We are building on donated research and have developed a website with photographs of the more than 5,200 gravesites of Jews buried there. Visit the website at: http://www.cygnet.org/anc2008/index.htm
Our ByLaws states that the purpose of our society is:
•To collect, preserve, and disseminate Jewish genealogical knowledge and information;
•To promote interest in genealogical research;
•To stimulate and provide instruction in the use of research methodology and adherence to standards of accuracy and thoroughness in research;
•To foster careful documentation and to promote scholarly genealogical writing and publication;
•To promote the preservation of Jewish genealogical records and resources;
•To hold meetings for the instruction and education of its members and the general public;
•And such other purposes as the organization shall from time to time elect to pursue.
