Our son has been transformed through the ministry of the Jericho House. He was trapped in a life of addiction with multiple attempts to fix things himself with the help of counseling and other treatment programs. With the experience of the Jericho House leadership and their ability to lead residents to a regenerated life, we have seen the lives of many men completely changed. The opportunity afforded the men to better understand every aspect of themselves is resulting in service-oriented sober men desiring an interactive part in their families and mankind. What more could we possibly want?
The Jericho House not only helps men and their families over come addictions. They provide services as weell landscaping and remodeling.
Absolutely unprofessional! I watched a young couple suffer due to heavy meth addiction, infidelity, and unsupportive family. I saw a teen mom covered in 3rd degree burns while battling an infected c-section. Her husband did nothing to help her during this time because he was too high on METH to care about her or his newborn daughter. I tried to help. But I clearly am not able to deal with meth addiction.
After many years of watching marriage crumble they decided, together, to work out their marriage for the good of this man's 5 year old daughter.. whom he has not seen in 4 years. They were under the impression that this program and counseling would be the savior their daughter needed. Surely a place so devoted to God and God's work would want to help a couple who was begging for help.
Sadly the man's father was able to pay Larry and Rick under the table to keep that from happening. Even though the wife has never been involved with any type of drugs they alienated her. As if this was not bad enough they also alienated their child. They encouraged him to move on and FORGET ABOUT HIS DAUGHTER.
That is exactly what he did. The week he was released he started having sex with a woman who has 2 children by two other men and indeed she got pregnant. As if this was not bad enough this "man" named his "new" daughter after his "old" daughter, whom he still has no contact with, and shows her around like she is the only daughter he has.
What does that have to do with Jericho house? The counselor has added this "man" on facebook and posts antagonizing messages about this "new" daughter. Continuing to encourage him to ignore the very existence of his first child.
I feel that it is highly unprofessional for a non profit to take money under the table. I have a recorded phone call of the father admitting he did so.
I feel it is unprofessional to befriend patients on facebook and commend on their personal life. Even more so knowing that this same patient has used again since being out.
I feel that it is against God to pick and choose what part of the Bible is important when attempting to teach men to be men.
This is not an acceptable establishment. It is my personal goal to make sure that the corrupt are exposed for their terrible choices.
"Thou shalt not commit adultery" Exodus 20:14.
"Whoso looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart" Matthew 5:28
"eyes full of adultery, that cannot cease from sin" II Peter 2:14.
"Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery. And whosoever marry her that is divorced, committeth adultery" Matthew 5:32.
"No whoremonger, no unclean person hath an inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God." Ephesians 5:5
It's important I mention that this wife did cheat on him. And too had another child. But only after he fathered 2 other children and was in a relationship with another woman for multiple months. After they decided to fix their marriage she has remained untouched by other men. Not a date. Not a lunch. Not a dinner. No phone calls. Nothing. She repented to God. She has kept her word and by the guidance of the staff her he continues to live in sin.
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
“This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
Praying for you and hope you find peace. I hope you and ex can work your problems with yourselves out for the sake of your daughter. Attacking others who are trying to help will not help you be there for your daughter. Complete fantasy. These are the things that had made it impossible to help counsel you and include you in the family healing process because if these hostilities. You obviously are in a lot of pain and you will be in our prayers.
My name is Damir and I met Larry 6 years ago in Waypoint. Since I am from Croatia you can imagine how different things were for me. Larry, Nick and all the guys were so awesome to me and I can honestly say that if there wasn't for Larry, who knows where my life would be right now. If so at all. He was the one that sacrificed his personal life and his family to help us. A calling on his life that God has for him. I know how hard it was and I've seen it first hand. Trust me, there is no money in the world that would pay for what he is doing every day. All the broken homes and problems of each man on his back. But also, the result of us becoming godly men and broken families put together. What a blessing for me to see and experience! I live a clean & sober life for six years now, have my own business and I am forever grateful that I had a chance to go through the program under Larry's guidance.
This progam is horrible I know it from experience. Do not be fooled that "God brought you here for a reason" ...please do yourself that favor. Religion is used as a tool to brainwash people into doing what McKenna tells you to do while in the program. He wants your money and could care less if u stay sober or not''.. so long as you pay him. Ive seen him treat people like dogs and drop them off at homeless shelters and make them walk if they don't want to be in the program any more. The living conditions would make any sane man insane. The only way he keeps his clients is if they're facing more time in jail or if they're horribly brainwashed into his insane version of christianity. I reiterate MORE time in jail. I'm a prime example. I was facing WAY MORE time in jail or woulda left to BE IN JAIL. Jail is better that the Jericho house, trust me. McKenna treats you like an animal once you sign that paper. Dont be fooled. He will humiliate anyone on that stool and, trust me, it's not to "save your life". It's to satisy his own inferiority complex. He loved picking on one client by not allowing his sister to buy him a pair of pants...he made him wear ONE pair of jeans every day and wash that ONE pair of jeans ONCE a week. Everyone else coulda had a wardrobe. He did it b/c that one particular person was overweight and got a kick out of it b/c he is a skinny mustached peice of trash. A despicable human being. That was just one example...there's millions more..it's unbelievable the way he interprets the Bible to justify his evil acts such as having everyone on food stamps yet feeding us donated food. We never got to use our food stamp cards ourselves. That leads me to the question: where was our food stamp cards really spent? I'll admit Jay did spend some of the stamp cards on eggs and other necessities but most of the food eaten was donated expired Trader Joe food...it was good the ...about the only thing in the program better than jail. Anyways folks : Do Not Be Fooled that "God brought you here for a reason" . Please...esp if u r a parent with a child in jail and wants your child to get better. I promise you it will make your child hate life and want to Get High. I'm serious: This place is no good..don't be fooled.
I am a recovering alcoholic and addict and have recently completed my Master’s in Psychology. I am interested in helping others like myself. Larry has been a family friend for over 30 years and I wanted his advice on how to get involved in a rehabilitation program to help other addicts. My dad and I spent several days at the Jericho House this July sharing meals, prayer time, and a church service with the men and their families. What I saw was amazing. A house full of addicts committed to Jesus, to each other, and to being sober whatever the cost. Addicts, including myself and Larry, spend lifetimes destroying friends, families, and loved ones. One year of life-saving separation from those same people to bring healing and restoration seems to be a small price to pay. The men I met seemed to agree.
I have kept in weekly contact with one of the men in the house since my visit through the mail. He celebrated his 5th month of sobriety this week which is the longest he has ever been sober. His letters are full of the love of Jesus. He constantly writes about what he is learning and the wonderful opportunity God has given him to spend this time at the Jericho House with other men that he has grown to trust and love. He has rebuilt relationships with his children and family. He now has a hope in a future he would not have dreamed of before.
If his were the only life changed by the Jericho House, it would be enough. Thank you to the McKenna’s who have lived through addiction and STILL CHOSE to help other addicts anyway.
To you Larry,
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. – Mother Teresa
As the wife of one of the success stories from The Jericho House, I can't say enough positive things about this organization. I admit, I thought Larry was insane after our first counseling sessions. Telling me I couldn't call my husband, or come see him, I thought was horrible. What I LEARNED was my husband and I were horrible to each other. He was an addict looking for an excuse to use, I was an enabler who needed someone who needed me to take care of him. Our marriage was in shambles when my husband went to the Jericho House, we were just to co-dependent to see the mess. After several months, and several mistakes and missteps on both our parts, Larry suggested a ladies program in Vero Beach, Florida for me. I fought the idea for awhile, but gave in eventually. When I arrived in Florida, I was still clueless as to how destructive we were to each other. After 9 months of counseling, classes, and tons of inner healing, I had changed and I came home to a different husband. We spent weeks getting to know each other, and working on our marriage--especially our communication. It has not been a bed of roses, it has been a lot of hard work, and lots of forgiveness on both parts, but our marriage today is healthy, happy, and blossoming. I look forward to seeing my husband each night when he comes home, we enjoy our time together, and time that was spent fighting, is spent praying and affirming each other. This does not mean we never fight, all couples do, but we use skills taught to us through the Jericho House and inner healing to resolve the situation. We now appreciate our differences and embrace our similarities. Thank you Larry for not giving up on us, when everybody else (including ourselves) had. Your patience and tough love helped us grow up and move forward into the life Christ intends for us!!
As one who has a son at The Jericho House I enthusiastically recommend this ministry. I have seen the life changing results in the life of my son as well as the lives of others who are the program. Larry and Rick are using their God given calling and talents to affect change in the lives of these men. They are allowing God to use them as a conduit to provide the necessary tools with which these men can use to allow God to help them overcome their addiction. It is not the ministry or the “program” or anything else that changes a person, only God can do the real change.
In the short time (8 months) our son has been at Jericho House we have seen many men come and go both on their own as well as being asked to leave due to rule infractions. Without exception, the guys who “get it” and buy into the program (not $ but with their heart, mind and soul) and allow God to do a work on their hearts are the ones who benefit and who see a radical change in their life. Is the program perfect or the leaders perfect? No and neither are any other ministries, businesses or people. Larry and Rick do care about the success of these men and their families and both are very knowledgeable about addiction and how to deal with it. I have seen their willingness to work with someone who has broken a rule when the person’s heart was right and repentant because they want to see the person succeed but not at the expense of undermining the ministry.
Addiction is destroying many families and we need to build up ministries like The Jericho House. It’s easy to find fault with any organization we are involved in but in my opinion the key thing is: are the lives of the men and their families being changed? I can only speak for myself and my family and the answer is YES!! Thanks be to God and The Jericho House!!
Two years ago Larry McKenna helped my son begin his long journey to recover from the addiction of drugs and alcohol. Through his intervention we were able to get the help my son so desperately needed. Larry gave of his time freely and generously never asking for anything. Larry is a good Christian man who cares deeply for those in need. Larry provided several options for treatment and recovery that included other programs. We ultimately chose another recovery center and Larry helped make arrangement to get my son into that program. My son is two years clean and sober this month. If not for Larry I know that I may not have a son today. I will be forever grateful to this wonderful human being.
What a great opportunity to be able to share our feelings about The Jericho House. To be a part of a ministry that is only two years old and growing is a God sent. We are not only volunteers but have a son in the program as well. We have been able to watch up close the changes the Jericho House has made in so many men's lives. The brotherhood that developes between the men is life long.
For us, we have seen the positive changes in our son, more confidence, dealing with feelings good and bad and buidling back bridges with people he loves. He has a renewed realtionship with God and understands the life long journey he is on.
As for Larry and Rick, these men give of themselves day in and day out with little if nothing in monitary compensation. The pay they get is the part they play in helping someone turn their lives around and live a happy and productive life. Both of these men care deeply for the men that come to them for help.
Being a part of The Jericho House has also changed us, we have made close realtionships with other families who know and understand the journey we are on. And through the recovery clases have learned how to deal with our own emotions and those of our son.
We are blessed that Larry and Rick have come into our lives. We will continue to work long after our son has graduated to help build an awareness of The Jericho House, and help in raising money for their continued success.
I have had the joy of knowing Larry and his family for over twenty years. My Dad served as Larry's Pastor as Larry experienced God's grace in dealing with his own battle as well as a call into this incredible ministry of freedom.
What a spiritual battlefield Larry and the team at Jericho House have entered. A battle to see men delivered from a life of addiction and pain.
They don't compromise and work to lift high the only name that can save a person from himself and that is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Larry has years of experience and uses a proven model of recovery that has been being used in a number of settings for years.
Take the time to learn more about this incredible ministry and get involved as the Lord leads you.
I am so grateful for the love, support and teachings given to my son at the Jericho House. My son is an addict and has fought his demons for years. The Jericho House staff and Larry McKenna taught my son to love God as well as learning to love himself. Larry McKenna teaches and rules with tremendous love , understanding and compassion.
I've been associated with non-profits for over thirty years and have known Larry McKenna for the past ten years. During my time with him for seven plus years at NLB, Larry not only helped my family, but helped me personally. He is one of the most dedicated men I've EVER known. He has always put others before himself and is a tireless leader and devote Christain. Because of Larry, I'm still at NLB daily and have been for the past 10 years. He is the main reason, I am teaching Famly Recovery at NLB and has recently helped me thru a tragic loss in our family (non-drug/alcohol related). Unfortunately, the world we now live in does not have enough Larry McKennas in it.
Addictions can lead to a premature death! We are grateful parents for the many ways that Larry, Rick and their families have helped save our son's life! The directors of The Jericho House ministry make many sacrifices to teach, mentor, counsel and sow seeds of biblical principles into the lives of the men and their families. We have personally witnessed a progression of healing in countless lives because of the "tough love" that is practiced day after day. Family Recover and Inner Healing classes have helped us understand the depth of a person's struggles and pain along with learning we are powerless over others choices. It has been a blessing to be part of a ministry where truth is uncovered, chains are set free and hope is found! We believe God has great things in store for The Jericho House.
The first time I met Larry McKenna... It was 2003 and I was entering my first of at Christian Regeneration programs at NLB. Since those days I've come to think of Bro Larry as a second Father. I followed him to Waypoint Center. Where I can honestly say that he has seen me at my worst. It was there that I expierenced what you are reffering to as his " Tough Love"... but, little did I know or realize at the time that was what I needed. He helped me go through Dunklin Memorial Church. and then to his Servant Builders program. I Love Larry McKenna... and I trust him with my Life. Throughout the Years. I have watched him struggle. Sacrifice time with his Family, Money, and Nice Houses to devot his life to the Ministry. He has never tried to make a dime. and virtually given up everything he has ever had to help others.. And the payoff.. well, the reward is to see people like me. 30 years old. Running one of the largest half way houses/ Programs in the Gainesville Area. Great life and Success story. that Came to Him A Broken Child in 2003. I believe in Larry McKenna. I would follow him into any battle. He is My Mentor. My Friend. And My Brother. And it has Been a Pleasure in Life Knowing him.
Thank you so much. God is blessing your life and using you in an amazing way. I am not surprised you are a gift individual. Love you.
Sometimes people come to recovery looking for help and they get the help they need, not the help they want. I have known Larry McKenna personally for more than 10 years. In that time I have been blessed to see Larry in action from many angles. I and my wife sat under his teachings in marriage classes. I have worked as a volunteer in two of his ministries and was on the original board of directors for Waypoint.
There is no doubt in my mind that Larry operates with character. His ethics are based on Godly principles and beyond reproach.
Recovery is a renewing of the mind. We come into recovery having been convinced of lies about God, about ourselves and about others.
When Larry challenges these faulty belief systems in addicts and co-dependent spouses it can either be received or rejected. Either way it is a painful experience to deal with the truth about ourselves.
Larry has a deep relationship with God and his recovery is Christ centered. If you think about it, each addict has set up their own throne and kingdom in their hearts and these kingdoms must be given up by the current ruler and the thrones made empty for the King of Kings. Those not willing to abdicate; who continue to hold on to the lies they believe will never know the truth and the Truth is a Person who could set them free.
This program is a Christ Centered program and it is the Dunklin curriculum. So someone looking to successfully attain sobriety with serenity must be open to a relationship with a living Christ. Otherwise it would be an exercise in futility; a bed and a job with no pay... With Christ it is a doorway into an eternal experience with God and a family of people who are pursuing the same passion. It doesn't get easier, it just gets better. Hardship becomes a pathway to peace.
Larry and his family have sacrificed more than can be imagined to serve the people society would rather not deal with. They suffer to minister to those who most churches would rather not be bothered with. When I see negative comments like the very few that are here, I praise God because I know that Larry is doing what is best for the men, even if the men can't see it now. AND because of this scripture: “Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires.” Matthew 5:10
So Take heart Larry McKenna and family. You are doing what is right and the people who have known you the longest are standing in a circle with you. We believe in what you have done and will do for the body of Christ.
If you are considering a Nonprofit for either donations or for help for a loved one, or yourself consider this ministry and this leader very seriously. The ministry will change lives and the leader will do what God asks of him, no matter what to facilitate that change.
I met Larry M. in 2000 when he was director of NLB. Through his Inner Healing class, I found freedom from many destructive behaviors and more importantly, the self-hatred that was causing me to live a life full of self-sabotage. After taking the class 4 times, he invited me to be a part of the ministry by helping teach that same material to women who were significant to the men in the program. I taught there for a long time and continue to teach Inner Healing to women; seeing many lives changed because of his influence on mine.
Larry knows addiction and is an expert at helping addicts! Most people in the life of an addict are co-dependent and continually enable them. Larry is definitely not an enabler! He knows that, at any time, one of his men could go back to drug use and it be their last fix. He knows that what he does is really a life or death ministry! And I have seen him rescue many perishing men, and their families, from the brink of destruction! He knows what he is doing and does what he does because he knows what works with addicts! I send people his way that I know need the serious kind of heart surgery that Larry does. Jericho House is an incredible organization! It has a great success rate (with people who really want to change and not just stay the same).
Thank you Lu. There are many ladies the Lord has touched through you too. God bless you
I have followed the work at Jericho house for over 4 years. ?The work that they are doing has helped many otherwise helpless cases get back into society. Yes he is tough. It take a tough love approach to get people to admit their addiction and beat it. His program is based on the biblical principles of gods forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
I personally know Larry Mckenna and Rick Aanonsen. They have both worked in this field for well over 20 years and their ability to help men overcome addiction is proven by the many men's lives who are now living in freedom. As far as honesty and integrity go you won't find two men who are more trustworthy. I am very proud to say that I believe Jericho House is one of the top programs to help men out of addiction in the United States.
As far as the critism goes, I know Rick and Larry are men who are teachable. That said I do not believe the men who wrote these criticisms have ever run a ministry like this and have absolutely no clue what it takes to do so. If I could offer them some advice, clean your heart up.
This place operates on a shoestring budget and utilizes food stamps to feed the men in the program. In my time in the program I witnessed numerous guys berated at the director's mood and that is contingent on how the wind was blowing on that given day.
It would also appear your treatment in this program was contingent on how much money you or your family possessed and was willing to give to the program.
I have seen them solicit (extort) donations from guy's currently in the program to buy items we did not have the money to purchase. Item's that were needed for day to day operations.
I have personally witnessed people who drank or used drugs multiple times who were allowed to stay in the program and other people who broke a rule once were kicked out.
In the likely event you are kicked out!
Don't ask for a refund!
You are graciously given a ride to town and left on the side of the road .
No phone call or help period. Don't bother to ask.
If you are repeat customer then this is the place to go as you can graduate in mere weeks or a few months at most.
Plan on working everyday in the cold or the heat or rain/snow. Class time is max 2 hours 2 times a week.
Trust me you are too busy working to have class.
After experiencing first hand just how fake the pretend pious nature Rick espouses to others and his real nature is revealed to you as he is kicking you out.
Which he loves doing, you can tell he neither care's if you live or die once he has quickly made up his mind to toss you away like a bag of garbage. No consideration is given to your legal matters or even if you have a place to go.
He carries mace in his pocket to protect himself, that should be an indication of his treatment of others, no golden rule here.
Let's not forget the "shoot from the hip" half-truths spouted by Larry. I am sure he thinks he is justified in his embellishment because in his own mind he is helping to save your life. If he doesn't know the answer he will make one up while you wait!
If you have any legal troubles I would not consider this facility as they will constantly threaten to call you P.O. about anything they consider a problem.
I am speaking of small stuff the judge looks at you and shakes his head ruefully like why am I being bothered with this pettiness!
This place is famous for making a mountain out of mole hill and sweeping mountains under the carpet if you have cash.
The only positive comment I can give on this facility is the curriculum from Dunklin Memorial Camp is good.
I love all of these reviews by people who have not lived in that house, nor have experienced the wrath of Larry or Rick. It is easy to say how great someone is until you have lived with them, then you can give an honest opinion on just how bad the conditions really are every day.
Board Member's reviewing the program, such as Jared & Emily Flowe how is that really a honest review. I can see Jared doing a review on NLB, but since he does not live there, nor has he ever lived at TJH just how accurate can it be!
How can he do an honest review?
Mr. Maddox you work there! Yet you speak of us not knowing how to run a ministry, I think Paul covers it best in 1 Corinthians 13:4–8a
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
Isn't this what Jesus taught??
I think these reviews should be for people who have been in the program or family, not friends of Larry's and Rick's and certainly not people who have not been in the The Jericho House program.
I am glad to see this is turning into a No Longer Bound and Waypoint review page. Talk about strongholds!!
Thanks for the insight. Proverbs 15: 31-33 “If you listen to constructive criticism, you will be at home among the wise. If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding. Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom; humility precedes honor.”
I am so sorry that you will this way. Now I know who you are. I will keep praying for you. I hope that you will be blessed with a job soon and that you will start on the road to forgiveness. Love you man. Sorry you are hurting and sorry for my offending you. Jericho House has evolved into a program that is very different then when you were here. We hope to grow even more. Thank you for expressing your honest feelings. God bless.
I love how this program is helping my husband over come his addictions spirtually, mentally and physically.
BUT I do not appreciate how its been eight months and wont allow him to have anything to do with his wife. We are unable to work on our family and marriage even when the program directly says thats part of what they do. It appears that they are trying to encourage us to get a divorce. Especially when the director of the program has gone as far as talking poorly about me to my husband and even in front of the other guys.
I've also been upset how in six months he was only allowed to talk to his 4 year old daughter twice and in the seventh month my daughter was begging for her dad so much I had to call the program and talk to a head counselor about her disstress. It was only then that he was allowed to start calling her. I appreciate Rick for making that happen. My daughter is exstatic when he calls and even though he is forbidden to talk to me I'm still greatful that he can finally talk to her.
Crystal, I am so sorry that you are hurting. I know there are things that are hard for you to understand. Your husband has permission to call your daughter every week. If he has chosen not to then I will talk to him. We are praying for you and know that all will work out in the end. YOur husband is doing better then he ever has and I know that means alot to you. Hang in there. And I will tell you this, I have discussed you because your husband brought things up in a therapeutic group meeting. Sometimes when you are coming out of denial you hear what you want to hear. I do not dislike you at all. I have prayed for you and will continue to do so. Hang in there. PS you and your husband have the cutest kid. She should be in the movies :-)
