I've been a proud volunteer with The Haven for over 14 years. I've always been amazed at how this organization has worked tirelessly to care for the needs of the animals who find themselves there, and also how it supports the humans who take care of them and the ones who adopt them.

Recently I fostered (and eventually adopted) a special needs dog from The Haven. He is one-eyed, and at the time of fostering was heartworm positive, and was very excitable. The staff gave me a lot of support and information on how to help to keep him calm, especially during his heartworm treatment. They made themselves available to me for any question or concern I had, and this helped me to feel confident in making sure he was comfortable and happy. The staff and volunteers receive regular in-service training and continuing education on current techniques and topics related to animal care and welfare, and it shows in their support of foster families and potential adopters.

In the end, I ended up adopting my one-eyed sweetheart, "Carl." This successful adoption and many others are due to a team of very committed and knowledgeable people at The Haven.

The Haven staff members are very helpful, knowledgeable and compassionate. Especially in the past two years they have continued to lovingly care for the dogs and cats in the shelter, and have contributed significantly to the number of animals who have found loving, forever homes. The Haven also attracts great volunteers who, along with staff, work to enrich the lives of these animals while they are in the shelter. I'm also quite proud of the way The Haven works with local animal shelters and organizations to build a community-wide network for animal welfare.

I found out about The Haven around 16 years ago. We adopted our dog Rusty from The Haven. He was very easy to train and looked like our dog we had in the past. For me rescuing animal is how I like to add a fur baby to our family. For many years I got to know the staff of The Haven. That is why I support The Haven in many ways. Time and financial support. Saving the animals is everyone’s goal at The Haven

I have volunteered at The Haven off and on for the past 2 years. Every time I have visited The Haven, the staff are friendly and always take great care of the animals! They do their very best to not only provide for their basic needs like food, clean linens, shelter and fresh water but they also walk the dogs and love on the puppies and kittens when they have the time to. As you can imagine, they are extremely busy - with the growing population here in our town, there just seem to be more and more animals dumped.

Every day I spend at The Haven is like a day spent in Heaven. Giving love to all the animals is always a favorite pastime of mine. The Haven runs like a smooth oiled machine thanks to all the hard working staff, volunteers and of course the multitasking Director Mike. Spend a day with them, and you can see just how many hats are needed to be worn, and how much help these animals need. With a great bunch of people all around I am happy to have found such an amazing organization to dedicate my free time to.

We have gotten two very special family members from The Haven! The Haven took such great care of them after they were picked up off the streets. One of our dogs had several surgeries for a broken shoulder while we were fostering her and The Haven staff helped us every step of the way and answered all of our questions. People don’t realize the toll caring for sick and injured animals takes on the staff and volunteers, but they do it because they live the animals and want to make the world a better place.

I have volunteered on and off with The Haven and employees for over ten years. Mike Graham and his employees are professional, attentive, helpful, empathetic and demonstrate appreciation to each other and their volunteers. It's a pleasure working with them. When I am able to foster (cats), they work with me in running ads and answer any questions I have. Somehow we have always found a forever home for my fosters! It's no wonder most of the employees and volunteers of The Haven have worked there for years.

When the little Labrador we had arranged to meet was adopted last minute by his Fosters (and we completely understood), we were promised by The Director of The Haven, Michael Graham, that we would be the first family called when the next Labrador came in. True to that promise, we got a call and were immediately smitten with the four month old black Labrador whom we named Tux. Four years later, when we wanted a lap dog we let Michael know and sure enough a tiny Chiweenie showed up. We named her Maggie and have remained best friend with the Fosters. The Haven tries its best to care for surrenders and to get them into good homes. We will always go there for our babies.

We are the proud parents of two Haven adopted dogs and we also volunteer. We can tell you that the Haven is run by Director, Mike Graham, and his staff, and is in good hands. Mike runs a tight ship - money is used as it should be and animal welfare comes first. They spend countless hours getting animals ready to go to loving homes, and are very particular about where they go. If we were to get another pet, it would definitely come from The Haven.

It is a pleasure to volunteer my time at the Haven animal shelter in Fairhope Alabama. The staff members friendly attitude and actions are sensed by the animals, tails wagging and meows from cats. The animals are treated with respect and their well being is first. Dogs are walked and at the end of the walk are happy to return the the Haven. A true sign of a place the call home for now. Thanks for caring.

After the loss of her 13 year old brother last November, our 1 year old girl dog was very lonely. In March we felt we needed to find her a new sibling. I researched and found The Haven right here in Fairhope so we started monitoring their website looking for the best fit. Once we found a good match, we completed the online adoption questionnaire and were then contacted the next day by The Haven staff. We set up a meet and greet with a litter of "lab looking" pups. The staff were fantastic and we could tell they loved their jobs and all the furry friends that that cared for. We loved them all but could only take one and HE selected us. Rhodes (now Cooper) was instant friends with his new sister...and they have continued to play (almost continuously) daily and in the process made our lives much happier. Thank you HAVEN for what you do and how you do it!!!

Hello: my name is Frank Kent a resident of Fairhope Al home for the Haven Animal shelter. A no kill facility that serves our community. My personal experience with the staff at the Haven has shown me the kind, compassionate, and caring attributes of all its members and volunteers. It has been my pleasure to be a monthly donor for years as well an occasionally donor of food and other goods that help the Haven continue their outstanding work. Example. The lady next door to me had lost her long-time fur baby a while back and in the same week lost her live-in mother. The Haven had told me about a fur one that was being surrender by her owners. I recommended to the lady next door to seek the Haven and asked about Lucy the fur baby being surrender. She did and weeks later after the proper process she came over and had Lucy with her. I could see the happiness in both her and Lucy. The love of Lucy and care of the lady has brought great joy for both. These are what the Haven works toward every day. Matching the right Fur ones with people who will provide their everlasting home. As a 100% DAV from the Vietnam War, I have had a rescue in my life that has helped me so much. Right now, I have Boomer my ten-year-old Schnauzer who is my Constance companion. If not for groups such as the Haven I or others may not have that in their life. The Haven a cherish safe place for fur ones. May all of them at the Haven be bless and continue their work for many years to come.

I have not adopted a fur buddy from the Haven as of yet. I am a 100% DAV and have a fur buddy named Boomer. He is my fourth schnauzer over the past 20 years and the words cannot described how he helps me each day. With that said I wanted to tell you about my association with the Haven here in Fairhope Al. I retired here just over two years ago and have had the pleasure of knowing Mike and some of his staff at the Haven. My part has been donations of money, food, cleaning supplies and fur buddy treats. Each visit to the Haven shows me the kind and caring people that work there. You always see them interacting with the fur ones just to make them feel love. Great people, Great place doing Great work. Hats off to them all.

Animals are a great judge of character and the dogs and cats at The Haven can feel that they are in loving hands.

It’s the job of an animal shelter to provide a safe place for dogs and cats in transition as they wait for their forever home. It’s a calling when that shelter additionally provides love and compassion. When I began volunteering at The Haven I immediately sensed it was not a shelter but a (hopefully) temporary home filled with love for each animal. Every single staff member and every single volunteer that I have met, without exception, focuses not only on the physical needs of the animals but the emotional needs as well. At The Haven it’s animals first!

I have been a supporter of The Haven since August 2, 2010 when I adopted my first cat baby, my Madison. Born on the streets of downtown Fairhope. I walked into the cat house in back and was amazed by all the kittens & cats! I walked around and there was one kitty that kept following me and practically jumped into my arms, my Madison. She was a Copper eyed, Tortoise shell kitty. Picked her up and immediately knew I had found my kitty.... actually she adopted me. They told me while filling out paperwork that she also had a sister there, originally there were 8 of them. I said no not right now I need to see how Madison does. Little did I know I'd be right back down there adopting her sister 2 weeks later. That's my Emily. These babies have been the lights of my life for 13 years, unfortunately we had to put Madison down 3 days before their 13th birthday this year. She had a heart condition that was inoperable and it was best for her. It broke our hearts, and Emily and I mourned her for weeks. Mike Graham and his staff at The Haven are awesome, I will always support them and their work in the community. I also had the pleasure of working with them on adoption days during my employment at Petco in Daphne. We had 4 little habitats and we adopted out lots of their kitties and older cats. These babies are spoiled rotten while in the employees care, we would buy them treats, toys, love on them and help them find their "furever" homes. We cleaned, feed and made sure their habitats were taken care of when The Haven volunteers or staff were not able to come by. The Haven helped me find the loves of life that helped me get through some very difficult times in my life. I will always be grateful to The Haven for their service to the community. Sincerely, Kelly S Kennedy

As a former high school club sponsor , we would donate collected items as needed for the Haven , food , blankets , treats, toys etc . As a human being , I’ve adopted 4 cats from the Haven - 5 years ago I adopted 2 - one of them - Zoey-our most favorite cat ever - died suddenly at age 2 -we were devastated . I adopted 2 more kitties (sisters)during the pandemic to help keep our remaining solo cat company … this past year I had to re-home my male cat , The Haven took him in and I’m sure he went to the perfect home for him . Staff has always been gracious , I appreciate that these fur babies are fully up to date on shots, are neutered, and micro chipped .. Mike runs a great animal rescue center and we are so lucky to have the Haven in our community !

I also adopted Cujo ( a Sheltie & Saint Bernard mix ) he was always by my side! He was adorable! I love and miss them both! Sebastian was a Persian cat that I absolutely loved his character. While volunteering at The Haven, I fell in love with this amazing place, ran by a small team of kind, hardworking, dedicated people who try so hard with the limited resources they have to make a difference in the lives of the homeless pets. All the cats and dogs are treated with so much love, affection and compassion from the moment they step into the shelter and up to the moment when they get adopted. Even though their days are so busy, the employees of the shelter always find time to play with the pets, hug them and give them treats, toys and blankets when the weather gets cold. It’s a wonderful place with such wonderful people and I truly believe it deserves all the support it can get from outside, either physical (by volunteering to help with the daily chores) or financial (by donating and adopting) as a recognition of all their hard work and efforts. I will always be greatful to The Haven not only for the wonderful times I spent there when I was volunteering, but also for giving me my fur babies that I love so much!

I am a foster fail for the shelter. The Haven took in two very scared terriers from a shelter in Louisiana after they were hit by a hurricane. The staff at the Haven tried so hard to help socialize the two dogs but nothing was working. All the noises and activities at the shelter were making the boys more scared. They asked me to foster to help socialize them. The shelter made sure they were vetted and healthy before they came into my home. This little shelter went over and above to make sure these two little dogs were given the best chance to be adopted. I was the failure and fell in love with them. As a recent retiree I was looking for an opportunity to give back to my community by volunteering. I had been viewing some YouTube videos of kind hearted people fostering dogs for adoption. I specifically followed the fostering and adoption of Pit Bulls. It touched my heart that so many people were making a committment to help this misunderstood breed. I took an initial tour of the Haven while considering volunteering there. What I saw was that many of the dogs were adult Pit Bulls-likley to remain at the Haven for some time. I have been volunteering for about two months now and the Haven staff are wonderful people working hard to care for all the animals. Not to forget the wonderful volunteers that I have met. We adopted our dog Willow, from The Haven. With Covid, we weren't able to meet her the normal way. We did the application, sent an email, left a voice message and even stopped by and left our name with one of the workers that we met outside. We later got a call and scheduled a virtual meeting. Before the scheduled time, we got a phone call asking if we could do the video call right then. She told me there were many other requests to meet her and she wanted us to be first. We were already smitten with her from the picture and bio. We did the meeting and said, "Yes, most definitely ". We picked her up a couple days later, after her spay surgery. We couldn't have found a better fit for us all. Everyone we dealt with was amazing. Every animal there has to feel the love and respect that the team gives them. We had some follow-up questions and they were happy to help us. We are very appreciative of The Haven helping us find our special Willow.

Anyone that helps defenseless animals find a good home are awesome in my book! I love the dog I adopted for my family. I will say I requested a small breed dog since I had a baby but our dog is now 60lbs Apparently she is mixed with blue heeler and I wasn't told that before. I don't regret it but some may try return their pets in a case like that so maybe just making sure to know full details on breed to give clients most accurate info. Other than that one small thing, they are amazing and deserve an award for sure! The animals all were clean and healthy when I came to get my dog. Staff was also kind to animals and my family.

The Haven is a unique and wonderful animal rescue organization. I have volunteered for them for over 15 years, so know firsthand the remarkable work they do to save homeless animals. In addition to the shelter, they have many other programs, such as spay and neuter, animal food for pets of low income people to keep their pets in their homes, presentations about animal kindness and care to school children, adoption fairs, and much more. They also do annual community events, which are looked forward to by everyone. Their staff is caring, hard working, and take their jobs seriously. The Executive Director is an exceptional person. I LOVE the Haven!! I’ve adopted dogs from them & also have volunteered with them. I’ve had many dogs as pets but the black lab mix I adopted from the Haven was the BEST dog ever!
They named her Queenie & treated her like royalty. She had been abandoned & abused but they did surgeries to take care of her medical problems (hot motor oil poured over her, creating scars, & bullets or pellets removed from her. Because of the love & care for her by the Director, Mike Graham, the vet & founder of The Haven, Dr Teresa Marshal, & all the trained staff & volunteers
Queenie was the sweetest and most loving dog. She was good around youngsters & older people. She went with me to visit nursing homes, special education children’s reading programs, school kids of various ages for programs about “Being Kind yo Animals”, & also adult groups who wanted to hear about the Haven & their animals.
Mike & staff were always helpful when I had questions about Queenie. She was the longest staying dog at their kennels (close to two years) & they never gave up on her. I was blessed to have adopted her & to meet the wonderful caring Haven people.
I was so impressed that later after Queenie passed away that I found two dogs elsewhere but insisted that they be “Havenized”, examined & adopted officially thru the Haven even though they had first come from elsewhere.
It has been a pleasure to donate & volunteer to the Haven, even though I’ve lived farther away.

I have been a supporter of The Haven for the last 15 years - ever since I moved to Fairhope. I have donated funds, resale items, kennel supplies, and through community event fundraisers.

Why?

Because I was a biweekly volunteer at the headquarters and also at weekend adoption events my first year in Fairhope (before I took a full time job).

I was an eyewitness to the excellent care and leadership from the Executive Director, Board, Staff, (well trained and supervised) volunteers and the City Animal Control Officer. The needs of the animals came first and it showed.

I answered phones and served as receptionist and office assistant as well as a regular dog walker. I saw how well The Haven was managed for not only the animals, but also the potential adopters, the public, supporters (individuals and businesses) and the animal control officer.

I have a good deal of past experience as a volunteer for a variety of non-profits as well as a volunteer coordinator. Some were good experiences others not so much...The Haven was my BEST experience ever. Everyone was committed to the goals and they were lovely (and even fun!) to work with as we did our part.

I believe in their goals and method and recommend them highly for your support by any method.

I adopted my dog, from the Haven in January. I wanted to rescue a great dog, and a dog that was perfect for me and my lifestyle, so my search included communications and conversations with a number of different rescues. While I cannot speak for the other rescues and fully acknowledge each shelter has their own unique situations and processes, I can absolutely vouch for the quality experience I had working with The Haven. They helped me navigate the tricky process of rescuing a dog during Covid and went out of the way to accommodate the fact that I had a busy schedule and lived over an hour away. While they had the necessary vetting process for prospective pet owners and went through all the required steps, they made it far easier than other shelters to go through the process (while still being a careful, patient process), including promptly reaching out to me when other rescues made communications extremely difficult. They were very open and honest about my dog, his history and personality, as well as his experience at their shelter and the care they had been giving him. There have been no surprises since adoption, and I was extremely pleased with the overall experience.

All in all, The Haven truly cares about their animals, and truly cares about doing the right thing. I have no doubt that they utilize their resources and funding as effectively as they can. Great place.

I have volunteered to walk dogs often and it was a great experience. You automatically become a member of the Haven’s family. I never felt like an outsider.

I have adopted two beautiful and loyal dogs from the Haven. Each adoption was easy. The staff provides you with as much of your furever pets history and care. They answer all of your questions. The pets are all fixed and have all their shots. They are all also chipped in case you lose your pet to help find him/her.

We adopted our sweet Boomer from the Haven about 5 years ago. He has been the best dog ever and we love him as a part of our family. When he was 2, he marched in the Haven Mystic Mutts of Revelry Mardi Gras Parade as a Storm Trooper and had an amazing time. He even won a pet portrait contest. Our lives wouldn't be full without this sweet man in our lives.

The experience adopting at the Haven was great. We saw Boomer online and they let us meet with him. Even though we loved him, they throughly vetted us as puppy parents with our vet. While we were nervous someone else would take him home, The Haven did everything to make sure Boomer was going to a good family.

After I retired 6 years ago, we moved from Illinois to Alabama with our 2 rescued labs. I had been involved with a lab rescue in Illinois for about 8 years and wanted to continue volunteering with a local group or shelter. I started researching various rescue groups, and ended up attending a local adoption event held by the Haven. I was so impressed with the staff, the volunteers, and the care and condition of the animals, that I filled out a volunteer form and signed up for one of their training sessions. At that event, I also fell in love with a young black lab who stole my heart and soon became part of our family. Like most labs, he loves to eat so we named him Gumbo, and like most labs, he has a loving and sweet nature. When I brought him home, he immediately fit right in. I feel like most of the credit goes to the staff who care for the animals and the volunteers who walk the dogs on a daily basis and help the staff socialize them. Working with Michael Graham, the Executive Director, the staff and other volunteers has been a wonderful experience for me. Over the past 6 years some of my volunteer work has included: working at the Haven Resale Shop; helping out at some weekend pet adoptions; attending a few fund raising events; For me, being a part of an organization who exists solely to rescue, care for, and find loving homes for homeless dogs and cats is a privilege and something I'm proud to be part of.

The Haven in Fairhope has always been there for us & the community! We have donated money & various items often in order to help sustain this organization. We had a combined effort of rescuing a dog. When we finally captured this sweet pitbull, they took it in & nursed it back to health, then it became the office helper, then went on to a TV appearance , then to it’s forever home! Another favorite thing they do is show up with dogs at so many community events, often with volunteers having the dogs on leashes & mixing in crowds, what a wonderful natural way to handle these adoptees ! In 2007 we had lost 2 of our beloved dogs and needed to find 2 more. I walked into the Haven describing the type of dogs we wanted: big, older, always have been together. The volunteer that day pointed to a poster on the wall and said, "You mean like these two?" YES! They had been rescued a month earlier from a hurricane either in Mississippi or Louisiana by Dr. Therese Marshall and brought to the Haven. They wanted them to be kept together but after a month, one of the volunteers took them both to her house because she felt sorry for them being in a cage for so long. So my husband and I drove to her house to meet them and immediately wanted to take them home. After passing a background check, plus having a fenced yard and knowing Dr. Marshall personally, we were given the OK. The volunteer, Jill is think is her name, brought them to us and we became a loving family. We named them Stan & Ollie after my favorite comedians Laurel & Hardy. They looked very much alike except Stan was smaller. Sadly, Stan passed away 2 years ago; Ollie kept trying to dig up his grave for 2 months. He's doing OK now but getting old, 12 or 13 we think. I have to help get his hind legs into the car when we drive to the beach for a walk. Ollie is our 8th dog and probably our last because we're old now, 72 and 80. I always tell people to adopt a dog rather than buy one, and that it's better to have 2 at a time so they feel safe. We love the Haven for bringing Stan & Ollie to us.

The Haven has been incredibly helpful not once but TWICE in finding the perfect pet for our family. Fourteen years ago, my husband visited The Haven weekly while searching for the perfect addition to our family. The staff was incredible and knew immediately that Dublin was the dog for us. Many years later and after the passing of our beloved Dublin, we again visited in the hopes of finding our new family member. The staff once again went above and beyond in helping make sure that Yeti was a great fit for my two young daughters. They take great care of the animals at their facility and are a huge part of the community here in Fairhope.

The Haven was great in helping us with the adoption of our Gracie and Aster (Iris). They kept us updated on Aster's progress as the vet checked a spot of concern. The staff stayed late so I could drive nearly an hour after work to go pick her up when she was ready. They have answered all of our questions and been very easy to work with.
