Mission: To collect, preserve, and tell the significant stories of kentucky and ohio valley history and culture.
Programs: The education and programs department presented more than 100 lectures and events in 2016. The lectures were presented by nationally recognized authors and are open to the general public. These presentations included the ormsby and the gertrude polk brown lecture series, two conferences, and various educational lectures that focused on culture and history. The filson's special collections department (manuscripts, photographs, prints, architectural plans, and ephemera) made significant additions to its holdings in 2016. Material dating from pioneer days through the 20th century, numbering in the thousands of items, is now preserved and will be available to researchers. Those researchers visit the filson from across the country and abroad to mine its collections for their books, articles, novels, plays, school papers, family history and more. Acknowledgements to filson collections regularly appear in resulting works.
