Causes: Crime & Law, Crime & Legal-Related
Mission: Cirj supports 3 primary purposes: 1) provision of legal services to low-income native americans in tribal court; 2) indigenous health research - cirj conducts and facilitates research on issues related to health with strong correlation to criminal justice involvement such as mental illness and trauma. 3) training and infrastructure development for tribal courts. This includes training of tribal court staff, development of model laws and policies related to issues of low income native american adults and juveniles, and consultation to legal advocates.
Programs: In 2017, all revenue and expenses were related to the provision of public defenders services to low income native americans in tribal court. There were three tribal courts services by cirj attorneys: port gamble, squaxin island, and skokomish tribes.
