Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries
Mission: The bountiful alliance is a 501c-3 organized for charitable and educational purposes to identify, develop, encourage and support projects, programs and activities of benefit to the community.
Programs: Bountiful kitchen: the facility is a certified commercial kitchen and small business incubator where individuals and businesses can rent time to prepare food products that can be sold legally to the publicwith funds from a usda grant, construction and outfitting of community kitchen were completed and the facility opened in april 2011. Kitchen staff and volunteers provided 30 individuals with training on fda food preparation and labeling requirements as well as small business accounting and marketing. 15 volunteers set up and staffed the community kitchen store which serves as an outlet for entrepreneurs products, local organic produce and locally made crafts.
advanced breast cancer (abc): increase awareness about the impacts of breast cancer to the "whole person" in all aspects of their lives and relationships. Efforts are primarily targeted toward educating medical professionals so they have a better understanding and more empathy for what their patients are going through. Completed qualitative research study investigating the experiences of metastatic breast cancer (mbc) survivors. Completed interviews and photo journals with 16 women with mbc. Results were presented at the first international conference on advanced breast cancer attended by 800 physicians, medical support staff, and patient advocates from 64 countries. There were 50 volunteer hours for this project. .
farmer's market: provides outlet for local organic food growers, qualified food preparers and crafts people to sell their goods to the public. The 2011 season went from may through october and had an average of 25 vendors and at least 120 customers weekly. The market redeemed $3,000 in ebt tokens which includes and participated in the ebt bonus program which gave $450 in free bonus tokens to low income token buyers.
fourth street community garden facilitates self-sufficiency by providing 100 garden plots for an annual fee of $10 so people can grow their own food; the land and water for the garden is provided by the city of truth of consequences. Over 100 people attended free public workshops on composting, alternative garden methods, tree pruning and desert planting. In keeping with the organization's mission, 22 volunteers worked in community beds, produced and distributed almost 500 pounds of food to the local food pantry
michael moore and more: focused on natural plant and herbal uses and remedies, this committee maintains a large collection of books donated by the widow of renowned herbalist michael moore to help educate interested practitioners. This year the program sponsored original research on desert plants.
recycling: working with the city of truth or consequences, 14 volunteers from the recycling committee sponsored monthly recycle day collecting glass, tin, paper, aluminum, cardboard, and limited plastics. Through tba's partnership with the new mexico recycling coalition, a baler was given to the city and recycling volunteers assisted city employees with cardboard baling and other recycle efforts. Over 327 tons of material were diverted from the landfill last year and the on costs tba incurred were for advertising.
