Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The Backpack Project is a non-profit charitable organization devoted to addressing the educational supply needs of area children in underserved communities throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area. We provide backpacks with school supplies, writing journals, and mentoring programs to children in need of assistance in grades Pre-k through 6th. These backpacks provide a symbol of hope, encouragement and boosts self-esteem. Every child should be fully equipped and ready to learn on the first day of school. It is our goal to fulfill this fundamental need. The Backpack Project, Inc.'s mission is simple - One Child, One Mentor, One Backpack at a time; but profound; and its impact on the life of a child is immeasurable.

Since 2010, The Backpack Project, Inc. has made a tremendous impact on hundreds of homeless and at-risk families living in transitional housing. THC's (Transitional Housing Corporation) mission is housing families and transforming lives and we provide housing and services to more than 500 homeless/at-risk families in DC. Backpacks filled with school supplies and Christmas gifts during the holidays have been a wonderful contribution to our families and instrumental in their experience as they grow through transitional housing. We applaud the efforts of Cassandra Jackson (CEO) and The Backpack Project's wonderful volunteers. It has been an honor to be partnered with this great and growing nonprofit - thank you Backpack Project!

Awesome organization, director is really focused on making a difference. Organization helps many families in need and does a good job supporting the community. Executive director is always looking to help, support and give back. She has started a fantastic mentoring program called "Backpack Buddies," great turnout at the mentor reception.

Great organization. Helps many families who are in need of school supplies but can't afford to purchase them. Spends multiple hours filling backpacks to the brim with supplies to ensure every child has enough. Would definitely voluteer for this again.

Great organization, doing wonderful work, and am truly making a difference in the community. I would highly recommend this organization to anyone who is looking for their donations to make a difference, or if you are wanting to give back by volunteering.
