Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture

Mission: To educate members and to promote and facilitate the collecting, study and preservation of military insignia and other memorabilia plus history of the united states military forces.

Programs: Asmic has furthered knowledge of american military insignia and history through the printing and distribution of 1400 copies(quarterly) of our full color magazine, "the trading post," which is 64 pages per issue. This publication contains numerous articles and columns that educate and document insignia and other memorabilia (such as photos, documents, uniforms, etc. ) of us and foreign military forces. Free copies of the "tp" are provided to the "institute of heraldry" at ft. Belvoir, va. And to other non-profit facilities such as museums and libraries on request. Included with each "tp" issue is our quarterly "newsletter" which provides open communications to all members. We also develop and publish numerous asmic insignia catalogs(29 different) and books on military insignia which are available to members and the public at very reasonable prices. Again, copies of these publications are donated to the "institute of heraldry" and provided to other museums and libraries on request. Asmic also assists collectors and researchers in the publication of privately developed insignia and military history books. Asmic also maintains our society library run by our librarian located at gettysburg, pa. We respond to inquiries for information on insignia and other military history items each week and will provide physical copies of excerpts from our reference materials as needed. We estimate over 800 inquiries in this fiscal year. Our librarian is in the process of totally reorganizing and improving the physical setup of all reference materials. Asmic also maintains a dynamic and improving internet website at "asmic. Org" with much information available to the general public. This includes ways to contact society officers for information or assistance. We are in the process of making digital conversions to all past issues of the "tp" which will allow computer access via our website to all articles and information published in years past. We currently have 17 years of past issues converted with work continuing each month we have continued our volunteer program of providing instructional and insignia packets to boy scout troops across the country for the "collections merit badge" which is part of the official boy scouts of america award program. In 2012-13,we had 1357 active members in asmic and have identified 1384 volunteer manhours donated to asmic during this past fiscal year to perform necessary leadership, administrative, logistical, educational and legal functions. This is a very conservative figure as many volunteers do not keep logs of hours donated- they simply step up to help when needed lastly, we conduct our annual society convention at different locations, usually in early september. Our 2012 convention was held at the drawbridge inn at ft. Mitchell, ky. On september 7&8. Part of each convention is to conduct 3 or 4 educational seminars, which are open to the public.
