Mission: The american gynecological club ("agc") was established in 1911. It is a membership organization comprised of practitioners of medicine who demonstrate the ability to promote improvements in women's health.
Programs: Its primary activity is to hold an annual educational meeting of the members at a host institution which is an academic medical center/medical school at which one or more of the host members are based as faculty. The meetings are generally held on a friday and saturday in the autumn and are designed to have formal presentations by local medical school faculty. The presentations focus on new developments in the field of obstetrics and gynecology and women's health care, including demonstrations of advances in clinical techniques or laboratory methods for research. Ample question and answer time is included, as well as time for informal discussion and debate. Tours of the host clinical, research and educational facilities are generally included. In addition there is opportunity for communication and interaction among the members and with participant faculty and trainees of the host institution. The host generally arranges meals, tours of local attractions during free time, that are open to members, prospective members and guests based on a registration fee. The format allows physicians specializing in obstetrics and gynecology to learn of advances in the field as they are being developed and to provide feedback and ask questions of colleagues. It also enables them to develop first hand familiarity with the faculty, the work being conducted and the facilities of peer institutions. In addition to advancing the field by educating those in attendance, this activity advances the field by stimulating new clinical, research and educational activities by attendees when they return to their home institutions. Members who wish to host a future meeting make a proposal at annual business meeting. The host institution is selected 2 years in advance, by vote of the membership at a business meeting. There are currently 90 members.
