Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission:

The mission of the American Anti-Vivisection Society is to unequivocally oppose and work to end experimentation on animals and to oppose all other forms of cruelty to animals.

Programs: Animalearn is AAVS' education division and focuses on ending vivisection and dissection in the classroom from elementary through college levels. Animalearn operates The Science Bank, a dissection alternatives lending library, which provides alternatives to using animals, from basic dissection to psychology experiments. By participating in national teacher conferences, hosting workshops and in-service days and providing information to individuals who request assistance, Animalearn helps countless students, teachers, parents and other community members make their classrooms more humane.AAVS' Outreach division educates the public about animal issues through our award winning quarterly publication AV Magazine and bimonthly newsletter ActiVate For Animals, both of which are sent to all members and provide comprehensive, up-to-date information on animal experiments and alternatives. Outreach staff also speak at conferences and place advertisements to reach a large audience, exposing what occurs behind laboratory doors. The Alternatives Research and Development Foundation (ARDF) is AAVS' scientific affiliate. ARDF awards grants to scientists and educators working to develop non-animal methods and promotes alternatives through seminars and workshops as well as writing articles for various scientific publications.

They do a lot of great work. I have signed petitions for them. They educate people on the horrific things done to sensitive, feeling beings in the name of 'science", that really yields no results. They are awesome for stepping up to make change and get rid of archaic, barbaric practices that torture innocent beings and waste taxpayer dollars.

I have been a supporter of AAVS for many years. They have been, and continue to be, a strong voice and advocate for those hidden away in labs, research and educational facilities. The suffering is hidden, but AAVS brings it to the forefront so people can see firsthand the mistreatment and gives them the opportunity to act. Abuse and inhumane treatment of our animal species needs to end--AAVS is leading the charge to help make that ideal a reality.

AAVS is one of the best non profits fighting to save the lives and reduce suffering in animals subjected to the horrors of experimentation. No one would know truly how much pain animals endure if it weren’t for organizations like AAVS. We as human beings and the animals owe them a great deal of gratitude as they shed light on the horrific and needless abuse of animals in labs. There are many alternatives that are much more effective and reliable than using animals in experiments. AAVS has been working tirelessly to improve the lives and promote alternate means of testing! Please consider supporting this great non profit as they continued their very important work!

I first became aware of AAVS approximately 30 years ago while conducting research for an undergraduate speech I was preparing against animal testing and vivisection. The materials I found sickened me, gave me great background for my speech and made a lifetime member and donor of me. Since then I have used their Leaping Bunny program and data to inform my shopping experiences and have kept abreast of the wonderful work that they continuously do for all animals in need. Though they are not the only organization who speaks for those who have no voice, I rank AAVS as one of the absolute best. I applaud their dedication and tireless work. They have my utmost respect.

AAVS has been an incredibly important source of information and education addressing the state of animals in Laboratories and medical research.
I have been grateful for the expert and thorough data they provide in helping me fight for the END of ALL animal testing and use of animals for medical research.
They are dedicated and driven and have achieved many victories-helping to end the suffering of many animals-along with helping to create a more humane, human relevant testing system. This will ultimately save millions of tax payers money, animal lives and human lives!

When I had a true animal crisis, AAVS was only one of two, out of all the charities, who actually spoke to me on a personal basis about the emergency and were willing to take some real action to help save the many animals involved. They were in contact with me on a person to person basis throughout the crisis
AAVS also operates several important programs such as, Animal Learn, Leaping Bunny, and non animal industry initiatives, which help save animals.
AAVS is worthy of all the support and recognition we can give them for the sake of the many animals they help save!

I have personally been fighting against animal testing for 35 years. The one thing that gets me about animal testing is their physiology is different than that of a human. For example, a cat can die if given aspirin but yet it's safe for humans.

"The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?" Jeremy Bentham, philosopher, 1748 - 1832.

Social responsibility, ecological preservation and evolution of consciousness are the challenges of this age. It is evident that we have not yet fully evolved as a society when the unconscionable practices, cruelty and inhumane suffering of ALL afflicted animals (no matter what the reason), is still a reality in the 21st century. On the contrary, it's despicable!

(paraphrasing here) "The greatness of a civilization is judged by how it treats other lives and species." Other lives are not here for us to play with, torture, experiment, wear in "luxury", disregarding as sentient beings. It has taken 5 billion years for this miracle of life on this planet to reach its interdependent, awesome cohesiveness and wholeness - and a blink of an eye for us to inflict unbelievable suffering and wanton disregarding for that, as well as potentially destroying all life - including ourselves. AAVS has always been on the vanguard for educating, protecting, exposing, qualifying the intrinsic value of all life - and our moral imperative to respect and cherish it. As well, we have Leaping Bunny, my shopping bible (beware of products claiming to be cruelty-free if they do NOT have LB or Peta or the kitty [I forget the name - a new cruelty-free investigation group] symbols! Amazon is one of the evil perpetrators, claiming so many of their products to be cruelty-free - until you ask the vendor or manufacturer and receive - silence!!)

AAVS is a top notch charity that has convinced me to become a monthly donor/supporter. They advocate regularly for animals abused in labs and encourage researchers to adopt cruelty-free, more effective alternatives to dissection and other animal testing. Their Leaping Bunny shopping app also allows people to pick/buy cruelty-free products.
With the rapid advance of our society's technology, there is no longer any need to abuse animals for research. AAVS has hastened the transition to these cruelty-free alternatives, and that's why I have chosen to support them with an electronic monthly donation.

I have been a life member of AAVS for more decades than I am able to remember. I can recall when Bernard Unti was president and he and I became friends, I was kept abreast, in a most personal way, of the projects and undertakings of the organization. At that time there were three major national antivivisection organizations on the scene; now there are only two, making AAVS's work even more important. From the days of Mr. Cave. the AAVS has been on the forefront of fighting the evil that is vivisection. Before the major animal rights organizations of today, AAVS was there leading the good battle. When the definitive history of the animal rights movement is written, AAVS will be listed as one of the pioneering organizations. AAVS has always funded and supported major efforts and campaigns to fight vivisection. Without the efforts of AAVS, we would still be advocating and funding the archaic, nonscientific and inhumane methods of Dr. Claude Bernard, the father of vivisection. AAVS deserves all of our enthusiastic support.

This is a fantastic organization that I have supported for over 10 years now. The fact that live animals are experimented on, including non anaesthetized surgery is utterly disgraceful and is an absolute shame. It is sad an organization needs to specialize in this, but because such an organization is needed, I am proud to continue supporting AAVS for the rest of my life, or until they are hopefully no longer needed.

I am always impressed by the work AAVS does on behalf of animals, especially through education of the public and by encouraging the development of alternatives to the use of animals in research. But I have been even more impressed during this pandemic by the organization’s dedication to continuing its work behind the scenes, despite the difficulties — helping science teachers to make use of alternatives to live dissection as they adapt to online teaching; helping sanctuaries that care for animals that have been freed from labs; and continuing to pressure government agencies to live up to their responsibilities on animal policies.

The American Anti-Vivsection Society is a wonderful, long standing organization that does amazing work for the welfare of all animals. They research alternative methods for testing in medical laboratories to show that animals do not have to be used and abused in tests. These alternative methods provide much better data regarding humans and saves the animals from cruelty and death. They support sanctuaries and promote cruelty-free shopping and just recently won a court case for the welfare and protection of birds. I believe in them so much that I named them my charity organization on Amazon Smile. Keep up your wonderful work, AAVS. The animals and the public need you.

This is one of my two favorite non-profits. I always loved how their in-depth articles provided lots of scientific information for addressing animal testing issues. Then, in the early nineties, I was president of the animal rights group at the college I was attending. I wanted to provide information to people to cause them to stand up for animals. Even though I contacted multiple organizations, most organizations did not provide a whole lot of help. But, AAVS provided buttons and an abundance of literature. They really care about helping animals, and they do it with science.
Then, years later, i took an additional college course in anatomy. AAVS helped me then too, to fight for an alternative to dissection labs. These are only two of the multiple times I reached out for help. They ALWAYS help. I can't say enough how wonderful I think this organization is.

I subscribed to emails from them and visit their site frequently as well as looking into the things they do. All around, I’ve been extremely impressed. All the staff are passionate about what they do, and the emails help you make a difference for animals. The things they do are never to antagonize anyone, rather to persuade and encourage. I became aware of vivisection from a school paper written by a friend years ago; it opened my eyes to the horror of what animals used in research go through. I found AAVS via a web search, and through them, learned about efforts being made to reduce and eventually end the use of animals in research labs. I have been a member and continue to participate in "Activate for Animals," their online program to encourage activism. They are a strong voice for the voiceless, an advocate for the hidden and forgotten, and a champion to those suffering at the hands of humans for the sake of research, when alternatives are available. I admire AAVS because it never waivers in its commitment to animals. It helps animals on a day-to-day basis by providing teachers and students of all ages with alternatives to vivisection, by educating the public on how individuals can play a huge role in humane treatment of animals, by monitoring companies’ claims that their products are cruelty-free, and by helping to support sanctuaries that care for animals freed from laboratories. But it also takes the long view by working to change government policies, educating the public, and working with scientists to find alternatives to the use of animals in research.

I like this group because it's goals are realistic. This country for the most part is never going to go vegan. It focuses on a issue that never should have been reality. That of volunteering the lives of those who cannot speak up and defend themselves for cruel and unnecessary torture for profit. If there ever was a need for testing animals, it's day is long past. There are many better and more accurate options now. Animal testing is only done because its cheaper and more profitable to the monsters who engage in it. I'd much rather give my money to AAVS then to any other group that talks big but commits it's own atrocities on animals or has foolish goals that take away from it's effectiveness.

AAVS is one of the few consistent advocates for eliminating experimentation on animals. The thought of using innocent animals for "research" and "experimentation" that has little if any benefit for humans is sickening. I have been a supporter of AAVS since college (many, many years ago). As it is said, a lab animal never has a good day. A majority of the research is unnecessary and cruel, done only for government grants, and is out of the public eye. AAVS brings these practices to light and offers alternative solutions for the unseen/unheard! The public is becoming more aware of unnecessary cruelty and standing up against it, but the work is far from done----money and 'tradition' is difficult to overcome.
