Causes: Environment, Environmental Education
Mission: The primary purpose of the organization is to promote and advance weed science issues (control of unwanted plant pests) in the state of tennessee.
Programs: To support weed science efforts in the state of tennessee with respect to research, extension/outreach, and teaching functions. This includes purchase of equipment that enables weed science faculty and staff to conduct research more effectively examine the environmental fate of herbicides under field conditions as to final pathways in air, water, and soil.
a major new initiative of the tnwss is an educational short course to be held each year or every other year, which will bring in nationally known speakers to lecture on weed science topics, including herbicide mode of action and weed resistance to those herbicides. The first event was held in 2015 with registered attendance of 40 individuals. The second course was held in 2017 and approximately 26 individuals attended the course.
graduate student training is a core mission of tnwss, and several activities were held over the course of the year to help recruit, train, and enhance the experience of weed science students in the state of tennessee and the southern region.
