Some of the main reasons I keep coming back to Ten Thousand Villages is knowing that the person making the items is paid a fair wage. Earning a fair wage has such a ripple effect from putting regular meals on the family table to children getting an education and a healthier living environment. Add in the dignity and respect the artisan receives from earning this wage through their own labor. Sales reps are able to give you a lot of background information on the artisans and products.
Very transparent. Build long term relationship with artisans. Strive to have best product available with client in mind.
Ten Thousand Villages remains as the pioneer of fair trade. The mission is that every artisan involved can live with dignity and support themselves and family. Safe working conditions and eco-friendly materials are among the tenets of fair trade.
Very interesting, unique items. Helps people in impoverished countries support themselves. Fair Trade leader.

Ten Thousand Villages meets its mission by working with artisan families and communities for the long term. I am a buyer for the organization, so I am fortunate enough to see the progress of these talanted individuals over time. Coming from a small fair trade import company to Ten Thousand Villages over ten years ago, I was initially concerned at how this larger organization remained in contact with artisans over various issues that may arise. I was elated when, after working for a year, that they really do walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
Ten Thousand Villages is changing the lives of artisans in developing countries and providing hope and dignity. Founded by Edna Ruth Byler, this company is a beautiful example of how one person can create change and empower others to make a positive difference in the world.
Not only paying a fair, living wage to artisans but also making a long term commitment to work with artisans until they are self-sufficient.

Great non-profit organization using fair trade to give artisans in underprivileged areas a chance to make a living wage. Also helps other non-profits and cares about the environment.
It was heartening to meet women in rural Ghana who now get a fair price for the amazing shea butter they make by hand, thanks to Ten Thousand Villages. They can send their daughters to school.
Providing income to artisans around the world in an effort to defeat poverty. They treat all with equality and respect. A truly honorable mission.
