Mission: Education of journalists.
Programs: Back pack journalist training: participants receive training in all elements of packaging a story from start to finish: shooting, writing, tracking, editing, and compressing the finished piece for both iphone and the web. From the course students will learn to find new sources using social media channels, use facebook and twitter to develop better story ideas, write attention-getting tweets and facebook posts, learn how to promote their work on social media channels, integrate social media with current job duties, and make best use of the latest social media software.
resume tape production: program includes coaching participants' writing, narration, and stand-ups, critiquing their printed resumes and cover letters, and counseling participants on their job hunt strategies.
producer/writer training: hands-on training through each step of preparing a newscast. Instruction in the basics and finer points of writing; critiquing tapes and writing samples; giving writing assignments. Training on newsroom software and in a control room provided. Skills students learn during the program include managing his or her time, stacking stories effectively, using graphics, using b roll and sound bites intelligently, writing compelling stories, and communicating effectively with anchors, producers, and news directors.
anchor training: hands-on training using a real newscast in a professional studio with two cameras, electronic teleprompter, and fully staffed control room. During the program students developed a number of skills which include reading from a teleprompter, tossing to live shots, introducing news packages, performing video turns, reading to voice over and sot, learning makeup and proper dress, learning proper use of his or her voice, and understanding the meaning and importance of the stories.
reporter training: students cover a real story in the nation's capital to produce a news package on tape and dvd at the end of the program. Students develop many skills by the completion of the program such as working with a videographer, conducting interviews, developing solid news judgment, preparing and performing stand-ups, writing compelling copy to b roll and sound bites, narrating a script, producing a professional news package, and learning journalistic standards and ethics.
