Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding is a secular, non-sectarian organization that promotes mutual respect with practical programs that bridge religious difference and combat prejudice in schools, workplaces, health care settings and areas of armed conflict.

Results: Tanenbaum trained over 550 teachers and 950 health care professionals in 2012 alone, helping tens of thousands of students and patients. The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, a division of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, recognized Tanenbaum as offering some of the best practices in elementary school inclusion education in the world. A global study by the International Labour Organization cited Tanenbaum as one of the few resources worldwide addressing workplace religious diversity issues.

Target demographics: Tanenbaum’s strategy is to work with a targeted group of professionals to reach the wider constituency of their beneficiaries, colleagues and clientele. Our beneficiaries include: Low-income and culturally diverse school districts Hospitals and health care centers that serve diverse patient populations Grassroots religious peace activists who work in active conflict zones

Direct beneficiaries per year: 2,000

Geographic areas served: New York, New Jersey, National, International

Programs: The Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding is a leader in intercultural innovation. As a secular organization, we create change by giving professionals the practical tools, skills and information they need to behave respectfully toward people of diverse cultures and beliefs. Our four programs each target a specific group in promoting understanding and celebrating diversity: namely, teachers, doctors, managers, and peace activists. Specifically: - Our Education team helps educators teach about diversity and respect for religious pluralism. The result is a classroom where being different is normal and interesting rather than feared. - Our Health Care team trains doctors to respond to their patients’ religious concerns. Our customized consultations and training materials enable health providers to communicate respectfully with their patients and achieve better treatment outcomes. - Our Workplace team helps companies address prejudice in the workplace and welcome all employees to the office, from atheists to people of minority faiths. - Our Conflict Resolution team supports international peace activists who are motivated by their religion to pursue peace. We support their wide range of tactics, from peace and intercultural education to using the pulpit to mobilize support for peace. All our work is inspired not only by The Golden Rule - to treat others as you would like to be treated - but by the Platinum Rule- to treat others as they want to be treated.

Tanenbaum is doing a great job in educating about religious diversity in the schools and workplace. As someone formerly associated with the United Nations, I know they are well-known around the world for their work.

During an extended period of time Tanenbaum worked closely with the teachers, students, parents and school administrators to address religious diversity in the school community. By implementing components of the highly effective " Religions in My Neiborhood" curriculum we learned to turn statements into questions and to develop a culture of respect and appreciation for religious differences. The Tanenbaum staff who provided the workshops and numerous hours of conversation in support of the on-going work were exceptionally knowledgable and caring individuals. We would have welcomed many more hours of contact with them.

I have been involved with the Tanenbaum Center for more than 10 years as one of their recipients of the Peacemaker in Action Award. They have helped us establish an excellent network of peacemakers who are from multiple religious traditions. From the Board to staff to volunteers I have been extremely impressed with their dedication, passion, transparency, and expertise. It is only due to their labor that we are able to have a network of religiously motivated peacemakers around the world who regularly have informed, challenging and inspiring conference calls so that we can encourage one another in our efforts for peace. The fact that peacemakers who receive this award stay connected year after year is a great tribute to Tannenbaum and the value they add to our lives and work.

It is my privilege to partner with Tanenbaum on several occasions to facilitate workplace sessions to increase the Understanding of the Impact of Culture and Religion in the Workplace across the Asia Pacific region. Tanenbaum’s resources are outstanding – thought provoking, relevant and do not demonstrate a religious agenda. They have exceptional leadership and I thoroughly enjoy partnering with them. The Tanenbaum team is authentic and approachable which enables a tough subject matter to be accessible given their depth and breadth of the subject matter, concise and mindful language. While passionate, leaders at Tanenbaum advocate only for mutual respect that bridges religious difference. A top class organization that deserves attention! My involvement with the Tanenbaum Center is primarily as a member of its PEACEMAKER IN ACTION network, a group of religiously motivated peace activists from many countries who are living out their faith as bridgebuilders and healers in conflict zones where religion is a factor in the intercommunal strife.
Tanenbaum is unique in the conflict transformation field in sponsoring this network and keeping the members in regular contact with one another. The ongoing relationships, as well as biennial retreats, provide encouragement and practical wisdom to the members of the network. I traveled to Nigeria in December, 2010, as part of a three-person interfaith delegation, sponsored by Tanenbaum, which enabled the entire network to support our Nigerian colleagues, who are working diligently and courageously to heal the bloody conflict between Christians and Muslims there.

I have never seen an organization the size of Tanenbaum tackle conflicts and create actual change in the world to the extent that they do. Having worked with them, I know from experience the lives that they have touched domestically and across the globe. Religious prejudice is a crisis that the world has known for thousands of years, but with the training and support systems Tanenbaum provides, there is a beacon of hope for those unfortunate enough to experience religious persecution
