Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Judaism, Religion

Mission: Synagogue 3000 believes that synagogues are the best way to enrich and sustain the Jewish people. But in order to do that, synagogues must change. They must become sacred communities. Sacred communities are those where relationships with God and with each other define everything the synagogue does; where ritual is engaging; where Torah suffuses all we do; where social justice is a moral imperative; and where membership is about welcoming and engaging both the committed and the unaffiliated. Synagogue 3000 serves the Jewish people by strengthening clergy, professional and lay leaders of Jewish sacred communities, supporting researchers in synagogue studies and congregational studies, and equipping seminary students pursuing pulpit careers. We focus on people, rather than programs or institutions. We learn from the best, wherever we might find them. We connect practitioners and scholars in order to close the feedback loop between research and progress. And, most importantly, we seek long-term systemic change-no less than to transform the face of Jewish congregational life in the 21st century.

Programs: Training of synagogue leadership through the synagogue 3000 leadership network and the synagogue 3000 institute for synagogue studies.

I've participated in multiple Synagogue 2000/3000 events over the years, and am always impressed by both the content and the dynamic presentation style of the speakers. All that they produce is high quality and of great value to the community.

Syangogue 3000 continues to be one of the preeminent organizations on the cutting edge of the Jewish transformation movement. I have found them to be open, inventive, inclusive and enthusiastic in all my dealings with them. I always learn through my encounters with their personell and their programs.

Synagogue 3000 gave us the initial grant necessary to launch our Next Dor project. Taking the form of a renovated house, Next Dor in St. Louis will be a post-denomenational, non-institutional space for Jewish young adults to build a vibrant community. By hosting Shabbat dinners, networking, mentoring, learning, meetings, movies, art, and culture, Next Dor will become the center of a new Jewish experience in St. Louis. This project could not have been pushed so far in such a short period of time without the support of Synagogue 3000.

Synagogue 3000 has had a tremendous impact on the way I think about spiritual communities and where the Jewish community is headed into the future.
