Mission: Sustainable West Milford is a non-profit organization that looks to: "Enable community members to transform West Milford and it's regional neighbors into an economically vibrant, environmentally friendly, and sustainable community through their personal participation and leadership."
Results: -Major Achievements since we began our work; o Local Organic Community Garden -40 families growing their own food for 3 years on this ½ acre of donated land. o Monthly Organic Gardening Education used by over 100 regional community members o Township Council that supports our work and approves our projects o Tire Pressure Check – partnered with the local car wash and parts store to provide information and training for 80 residents to keep their tires properly inflated o Highlands GreenFest – a regional ‘green’ festival in 2008 & 2009, drew over 1,000 people to learn how to live, protect and enjoy our region. o Highlander Drive Clean Up – Over 2 tons of trash picked up in a bear-ridden section of the road next to the high school. Source point of pollution problem solved with bear proof dumpsters at the middle school. o Two Annual Pizza Tasting Contests showcasing 10 local pizza restaurants raising awareness of local residents to buy locally o Native Medicinal Garden – a rescued Adopt a Spot has been transformed over the last two years through a volunteer effort. The garden is used as an educational oasis with native and endangered plants that can be used to both heal and feed us. o Green Team w/WM High school – Supporting the efforts of a student based grass roots effort to encourage and model green practices. This team brought can/bottle recycling to the school, where none was being done before and are now teaching elementary school students on how to live a greener life. o West Milford Farmers Market – The first farmers market in our town draws over 750 people weekly to this community commons space to learn about and purchase fresh local produce and prepared foods, goods, services and entertainment from local merchants and artists.
