I have been volunteering with Sustainable Connections for several years now. I was first introduced to this nonprofit through a roommate who served as an AmeriCorps VISTA with them, and since then have had many fantastic community building/volunteer service opportunities. In fact, her positive experience with them & AmeriCorps inspired me to do two VISTA terms myself (with another group, though). All of SC's programs, from Food & Farming, Energy, and the many others, have made a noticeable positive difference in our community. The staff and volunteers give wholeheartedly, and volunteers are well-recognized (and celebrated!) by the fun, dedicated, and hard-working staff members. Whether volunteering solo at a tabling event or working with a group of other volunteers to help manage large community food events, my volunteer experiences with Sustainable Connections have been positive AND, most importantly, impactful. I would highly recommend this agency to anyone looking to volunteer or simply learn more about getting involved in their community.

Nonprofit Overview
Causes: Business & Industry
Mission: We envision a thriving, collaborative community where local businesses are prosperous, and contribute to a healthy environment and the well-being of all citizens. We seek to be the forum where businesses come together to transform and model a vibrant local economy built on sustainable practices.
Geographic areas served: We primarily work in Whatcom County, but some programs such as the Community Energy Challenge and the Food & Farming Program also work in Skagit and Island Counties in Washington State
Programs: We have five main program areas that focus on working with and helping different sectors within our local economy. The Energy Efficiency and renewables program works to facilitate a local economy powered by the efficient use of clean, renewable and secure energy. We do so through education about our communities opportunities to succeed, promoting our clean energy leaders, and connecting our members to the resources that they need to become successful leaders. Food & Farming Program works to preserve the viability of local agriculture and increase the share of it that is sustainably grown. We work with farmers, restaurants, grocers, the general public and institutional food buyers. The Green Building & Sustainable Development Program educates the public and trains architects, designers, builders, government representatives and developers in ways to build in ways that are more beneficial to the environment and have less impact on our planet.
