I first heard about SurfAid International through an online retailer called Swell. They had SurfAid wrist bands advertised for sale but what really grabbed my attention was the SurfAid story. The mission of SurfAid International, a non-profit humanitarian organization, is to improve the health, wellbeing, and self-reliance of people living in isolated communities connected to us through surfing. This really appealed to me and after reading through was SurfAid was all about I decided to buy the wristbands to help contribute to the ogranization. About 3 years later there was an ad in a local San Diego paper that SurfAid was hiring a new director for the US office. I decided to check out the website and while doing so, I realized that it would be a great opportunity to volunteer or intern with the organization. I had just recently changed my major to public health and SurfAid's mission and programs directly realated to what I was interested in studying. So, I emailed the office manager Elizabeth and ultimately set up a schedule for an internship. I have been interning with SurfAid for about 2 months now and it has been wonderful! I have learned a lot about what this organization does for the people of the Indonesia as well as the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities in the office of a non-profit. I have had the opportunity of meeting and getting to know the staff of the US office as well as the Australian office. These people are extraordinary and you can tell that they really love what they do and want to help SurfAid reach its highest potential as an humanitarian organization.
