Mission: Sure We Can (SWC)’s mission is to serve independent recyclers, also known as “canners” - people who collect bottles and cans to earn income for 5-cents a piece under New York State’s “Bottle Bill,” through economic empowerment, social inclusion, and environmental awareness. Sure We Can was founded in 2007 by a group of canners to fill critical gaps in access and mitigate stigma associated with canning and the marginalized people who perform it by providing a supportive, compassionate alternative for canners to access redemption services. Sure We Can is the only nonprofit, community-based bottle and can redemption center in New York City and a thriving community space for canners. Our work lies in ensuring canners receive fair pay for their work, opportunities to grow in their job and their lives, opportunities to advocate to institutions for improvement of their conditions, and above all, dignity, support, and belonging.
