Causes: Blood Banks, Health
Mission: Suncoast communities blood bank (scbb) provides a reliable supply of quality blood products and services to hospitals and health centers in need. Our singular purpose is to collect, test, process, match, store and distribute all the blood products required to serve the hospitals and health centers in our community.
Programs: Suncoast communities blood bank (scbb) provides a reliable supply of quality blood products and services to 12 hospitals and health centers in four counties. In fiscal year 2017, suncoast communities blood bank collected 34,161 units of allogeneic red blood cells and 4,065 platelets 21,568 donors. Over the course of the year, suncoast communities blood bank supplied over 38,226 blood products to the patients in local hospitals. Thirteen tests (11 for infectious diseases) are performed on each unit of donated blood products. Scbb also provides a full range of transfusion services to sarasota memorial hospital. In addition, scbb participates in mononuclear cellular therapy, a treatment program for late stage prostate cancer. Suncoast was the first blood bank in the country to acquire the technology to pathogen reduce platelets, adding another level of safety to this blood product. In 2017 sarasota chamber of commerce names suncoast nonprofit of the year. Suncoast communities blood bank is fully-accredited by the aabb (formerly the american association of blood banks), exceeds all standards set forth by the fda (food and drug administration) and is certified by clia (clinical laboratory improvement amendments). We are proud of these accreditations and certifications because it means that our blood bank ranks among the best in the nation when it comes to quality and safety.
