MHS is, hands down, one of the best! The shelter is clean and the animals are so obviously well cared for and loved for however long they are at the shelter. I have adopted 2 cats from them - and each time they were somehow able to not only get to know and trust me as an adopter, but to match me with just the right baby. I went in thinking I wanted one thing and walked out with my perfect match instead :) It;s the love that they all have for the animals that makes all of the difference.

My story: I went to the Rock Hill spca (Sullivan County NY) 2 weeks ago, filled out an application and was approved for a kitten named Chance. An employee promised me the kitten was on hold for me. I specifically asked and was assured not to worry. I believe her exact words were “oh, don’t worry, this cat is yours and will not be given to anyone else”. The reason I did not take her home immediately is because she had a tumor/cyst removed from her head and I was told she was not ready to go home. Anyway, I called today to check on the kitten and was told by the manager that they adopted the kitten out to someone else. Unbelievable. And she giggled about it. Apparently she thought it was funny that they promised 2 people the same cat. I just don’t even know what to say. This kitten was a Christmas gift for my 10 year old daughter. Merry Christmas spca.

This is in response to the uninformed and unidentified person that mistakenly claims that the the Humane Society of Middletown, Inc. is "only interested in there [sic] free government funding to keep there [sic] jobs , they or [sic] over loaded with pets and they will keep a thees [sic] poor pets in a cage and sleep on a cold concrete floor so that can keep getting donation." The Humane Society of Middletown, N.Y., Inc. does not receive any "government funding." In fact, it only has one full-time employee, namely its Shelter Manager. It serves the surrounding low-income community by rescuing stray animals, providing health care to them and finding suitable permanent homes for needy animals. The Humane Society of Middletown regularly offers Rabies Clinics staffed by dedicated volunteer veterinarians that provide low-cost care for family cats and dogs. It receives small donations from supporters, and from fund-raisers run by dedicated and hard-working volunteers such as its annual brunch and auction, and recent Photos with Santa event. Its volunteers and staff work extremely hard and long hours for low or no compensation cleaning animals and their living space, walking dogs, organizing and attending fundraisers -- all because of the staff' and volunteers' love of homeless and abandoned animals. Please visit the Middletown NYHumane Society facebook page for more information about the good work the Humane Society of Middletown does, and upcoming events and the darling animals available for adoption.

My mom and I went into the Middletown, NY shelter on 01/28/2015 to find a companion for her and immediately fell in love with Alaska.. We put in an application (the first and only application for her) at 1:30pm with help from the staff at the desk. At 4:30 I called and left a message that we would like to adopt Alaska and to please call us when the office opens so we can help expedite the application process.

At 12:15pm the next day Brian Keller (Shelter Manager, Facebook Administrator) called to tell me the application was declined.. At first he refused to tell me why saying that's not policy. I further explained "if I don't know why then I cant fix it?". I was denied because of this question: "Please give your veterinarian’s name, address and phone number" (copied and pasted right off the application)... NOW when I filled out the application I asked the ladies behind the desk (This I guess was my mistake thinking they could help) "do you want my current Vet info or my Previous??" explaining we moved and will be taking our new dog to a new Vet since the previous one was too far.... I put a new Vets office (I called to make sure they are taking on new pets first) Name and number and they called and had no record of us or any pets there of course.. We hadn't gone there yet we didn't have a pet to take.

I explain to Brian on the phone that the ladies at the desk told me to put that information on the application and I could give him our Previous Vets info his reply "you were denied " AND HE HUNG UP ON ME!

Now, he just called to tell me I was denied at 12:15pm... I immediately get in my car with Vet records in hand to speak to them face to face since our conversation was abruptly ended. It takes me 1 hour to get there...

Once there (1:15pm) I offered the more information for my application and the dog was ALREADY "promised" to another family..... Now we were being denied a dog because the staff told me to put the wrong information is just unacceptable. If the staff cant help you then who can????

This is so not fair.. In now have to start all over and Alaska was such a great dog!! We are all heart broken...

This place is a disgrace. They have had a dog Mira at the facility for three years. This reflects poorly on them. Why haven't one of the staff or volunteers adopted Mira. Why don't they make it MANDATORY that every person coming to adopt a dog has to first be sat down and told about Mira. Whoever is the adoption coordinator they are not aggressively marketing Mira. This is a disgrace. A shameful disgrace that any dog should be at a facility for this long. This is outrageous.

Please try and understand that we cannot force people to adopt a particular dog. Mira came to us, as a very animal aggressive dog , but great with people and in time she became more and more healthy. She is often overlooked although we are constantly trying to promote her. Often dogs who come to the shelter, are very unhappy in the shelter, but Mira is not one of those dogs. She gets played with, cared for and given lots of love by the staff. The other option would be to euthanize her... which we would never do. Again, you cannot force people to take a particular dog. You will be interested to know however, that due to one of our volunteers writing an incredible story about her experience with Mira, and that story getting sent all around the internet, there is an interested party, who we are praying will fall in love and take her. We are always looking for volunteers, if you are interested. Thank you for your interest in Mira's well being.

My husband and I recently adopted a two year old mixed breed from this noble shelter. We are over the moon about the newest member of our family and are grateful to Brian and the staff for making the process so easy. It was obvious to us how much these folks care about the animals in their care. Our new baby made a smooth transition to her new life, we believe, because of the care she received at Middletown Humane. Thanks again for bringing such joy into our lives.

Just had to share! We adopted Vivian from the Middletown Humane Society in May 2013 - she was trucked up to NY from a Kill Shelter in Georgia - and although sweet, she was a 7 year old dog & not in her prime adoptable years. She was PERFECT for us. When our daughter started modeling they asked us if we had any dogs - we did! Vivi just made her debut in Vogue Bambini...from kill shelter to the pages of Vogue...I'd say this old girl is doing pretty good THANK YOU Middletown Humane Society for allowing our family to make this sweet girl a part of our lives...

UPDATE...this past May 2014 we decided it was time to get Vivi (and us humans) a companion - after seeing pictures of two Shih Tzu puppies on the Humane Society website I left work early and RUSHED over there. The staff is just SO excellent...they made sure to get the paperwork thru that day so that they little guys could go home immediately!! These sweet boys are a perfect addition to our family & great little brothers to Vivi - definitely keeping her on her old lady toes!

We adopted our lil boy kitty Magee late last October. He was the last of his litter to be adopted and the staff had deep affection for him. We were looking for a kitty that was loving and affectionate since our other kitty is not. We also wanted a companion for our other kitty, Moxy. We wish we could've taken all the kitties home but that just wasn't possible. Brian recommended Magee (formerly known as Puck) and he was meant to be ours as soon as we held him. We left that day with Magee and have never looked back. His forever home is with us but without the Middletown Humane Society he would have never been a part of our family. Moxy hasn't totally fallen in love with him yet but we're sure she will eventually. We made an additional donation that day and still donate canned cat food and cat litter when we can. All the kitties (and the doggies too) deserve a forever loving home and the Middletown Humane Society is dedicated to this cause. They are a cut above the rest!

I have nothing but nice things to say about Middletown Humane Society. We have adopted 2 dogs from there. One older dog which is a min pin mix about 7yrs old and an American bulldog about 2ys old. They tell you everything they know about the animal and spend as much time with you as you need. They also answer all your questions/concerns. By adopting the dogs I have also gained new friends because the volenters love the animals so much they keep in touch with us and love receiving photos.i would highly recommend adopting from Middletown Humane Society.

My furry family mean the world to me and the shelter is great about celebrating these animals to help find them homes by actively using social media to get the word out. Adopt today!

I have been involved with the Middletown Humane Society for over five years as a volunteer, and I have adopted four dogs from the shelter. The staff, Board and volunteers do a phenomenal job of finding many animals loving homes, and they have worked so hard over the past few years, with VERY limited resources, to improve the environment for the animals and create a welcoming, supportive atmosphere for adopters. They have built several spaces for the cats where the cats can roam freely during the day and socialize with volunteers. They have an exercise yard and several outside spaces for the dogs to play in, and recently, one of our wonderful Board members donated a treadmill which we have been using to give some of the dogs extra exercise. The shelter still has a ways to go to reach its goal of being the best municipal shelter in the area---so if you are able or interested in helping, they would welcome it. But his shelter has come such a long way from what it used to be and continues to strive for the best for the animals in its care every day.

My first experience with the Middletown Humane Society was when I went to donate a bunch of food and treats after my beloved 15 year dog passed away. I was sobbing and a very compassionate woman accepted my donation and told me there were lots of dogs inside that I could meet, if I was ready. I wasn't, but a month later my husband and were ready to open our hearts and home to another dog and stopped in to Middletown Humane Society. That's where we met 4 month old Maddox, a Catahoula mix, that we renamed Grover. The staff was helpful and adoption went smoothly. We love Grover immensely and wouldn't hesitate to adopt from them again in the future.

I came by with my sons to bring some donations for the animals and we stayed for a while to play with the cats and kittens. I have volunteered and donated to animal shelters all over New York and I have seen great ones and I have seen heartbreaking ones....this is a great one. They are so caring with the animals. The entire time that we were there, different dogs were being walked. The kennels and cages are clean and the entire place is well kept. The animals brought there really get a second chance. Humane Society of Middletown is one of the very best in our area. The veterinarian staff they use, and the staff and volunteers continually provide excellent service to clients and local animal in need. Often times I have noticed their re-posting of pets lost or found on Lost Pets of the Hudson Valley on Facebook (one of my favorite groups). They are always quick to assist other organizations when called upon. I bring my pets to their regular clinics for immunizations.

A few years ago, I adopted "Henry". He is a sweet little dog of about 50 pounds. He had been horribly abused by someone, and the vets had repaired his face and he was ready to go to a forever home.
It was Christmas Eve when my adult daughters hauled me over the the Middletown Humane Society to see him. He was shy and quiet. He was small enough to fit in mt lap while I sat cross legged on the floor. It was love at first sight. They assured me he was not going to get much larger and I would be able to walk him.
We went home and gathered up our family, Henry and all, and went to the family Christmas Eve party. He was so well mannered! He curled up beside a three year old niece and never left her side all evening. Both shy as could be.
Well, he now weighs all of fifty pounds! I cannot walk him, because he is afraid to leave the comforts of home. He has his fenced in yard to enjoy and the run of the house. He refuses to go out the front door. I love this little Christmas gift! Thank you Middletown Humane Society!

Humane Society of Middletown, does amazing for each and every animal who comes through. Staff far exceeds with helping these animals find homes..Adoption rates are excellent.. Dogs that are difficult to place and that have been there 2years, 3 years until the right home is found..they are loved and cared for. Both the board and staff treat volunteers with nothing but respect and gratitude. Fund raising is constant.. I cannot think of anything they are not doing to help each and every animal that enters this shelter.. Most deserving of a great non-profit.

I started volunteering at the Humane Society in the Spring. I work with a great bunch of caring and kind people. You can see by looking at our dogs and cats that they are happy and comfortable because of the wonderful attention each one gets. Along with the staff, as volunteers, we take our dogs out on adventures to help socialize and exercise them, and learn their strenghts and where they need some help. We have a great volunteer trainer who teaches us as well as the dogs how to properly handle the animals. Everyone works so hard to set up events to bring attention and donations to our place. But, as always we are always looking for more help and donations to keep the shelter going. The Middletown Humane Society makes the animals feel like they are at HOME....until they find their forever homes with loving families!

I adopted my dog Sam there 3 years ago from them. He was a little ruff around the edges when i got him.
They helped me really get to know him by letting me spend hours and hours with him. It was a perfect match in the end. He is laying on his couch in my office right now! He has changed my life.
There is a dog there currently who has many issues and we are working on adopting. I know I cant do it alone..and they are there to help!!!!!
One of the trainers, Rebecca is scheduling time weekly with me to work with her so i can take her home and give her the life she deserves. I cant wait to start and for little Laurel to come join us!!! Shes been there so long and was in hell previously, no one ever showed taught her right from wrong. With Rebecca and the Staffs help, we will!!!!
They are truly dedicated to what they do.
Ive also seen them throw people out who wanted a dog for the wrong reasons.
Which to me, is wonderful!

We adopted our two dogs, Trixie and Ripley, almost a year ago from MHS. I had never been in an animal shelter before this. It was a great experience.

The staff made it very personal and encouraged us to spend time getting to know the dogs to make sure they were a good fit for our family. Both the animals and the facility were extremely clean and well cared for and the adoption process was performed quickly and efficiently. It was obvious that the dogs and the staff had an emotional connection as we left the facility.

We recently returned to visit MHS and once again I was impressed with how friendly everyone was, their love for the animals, and how clean the facility was. I visit the website daily because I feel personally bonded with them through stories and photos. Because of my experience I have become an advocate for animal rescue.

The people here are what make this organization so amazing, they all are there because of the animals! That all truly love them! The place is clean, I adopted a cat from there last month and they helped match the perfect one for my family! On another note when I got my cat home and checked out by vet we were pleasantly surprised that our newest addition didn't have flees! I had just thought an animal coming from a shelter would...but no he didn't! This in itself was a gift! The place is well run and the fee for adoption was well worth what you will pay if you were to go and buy an animal and then get it's first round of shots, and spay or neuter the animal! The humane society takes care of all of that!

Before I went off to college, my mother, who had been anti-pets, finally decided it was a good time to adopt a dog. We had heard good things from the Human Society of Middletown, so we decided to take a trip there. We took a couple trips, before we found the dog for us! And every time we visited, we were greeted with kindness. It has been over three years now since we adopted the newest member of our family, Max a Jack-Russell Terrier. We have visited and donated to the shelter since adopting Max. It is very apparent that all the volunteers at the shelter have the animals interest and welfare in mind. My daughter wanted to volunteer at the shelter & because she is shy she had me "help her" and I spent many enjoyable days playing with all the babies. Jamie became very comfortable with all the wonderful people who work there & blossomed. She walked right in started "her job". She loved feeling like she was making a difference & to be part of a great organization. And i secretly laughed when she "gave me orders" at feeding time. She loved watching them get homes & worries about the ones that are waiting for their homes.
We adopted 2 puppies in Nov. 2012 who were only supposed to be with us for a 3 week foster visit. They are the best thing that we did by adding them to our family! Ridiculously adorable & loved by all - they are her guardians. She was in a very bad car accident in May, and they slept with her or sat by her side every minute after she came home from the hospital. As it was the end of her senior year & couldn't go back to school, "the boys" were the best therapy in the world for her! Those first few weeks after she came home, I would watch them literally sleep on her & those little heads pop up to make sure nobody was bothering her, I asked myself many times, who saved who?
She is not ready to go back yet, but almost every day, she updates me on who is still there & who has come or gone through the website.
Charlie, Marlene, Pam, Debbie, Brittany, Pam, Jamie Marge & all of the amazing volunteers do a wonderful job - every day of the year!

These guys are really excellent! They care about each and every dog and more importantly they really care about the people that adopt their dogs. They are so vested in helping people add that perfect addition to their family. They go out of their way to help dogs with special needs and I love that they get to know a little bit about every dog and can tell if that dog will be good with cats, dogs, and kids and they respect that dogs needs and make sure the adoptive family understands. We adopted our cat, Drew, at the Middletown Humane Society. To say they are awesome is an understatement! They took the time to introduce us to the many cats there. They told us each one's "story" in the cases where they knew it. They knew the cats' personalities. They did not pressure us or rush us. They were also sympathetic to the fact that our 15 year old cat had recently passed away. In the time since they let Drew adopt us, we have gone to visit the animals who are waiting for their furever homes. We have donated cat/dog food, towels, litter and an air conditioner. When a stray cat who had clearly been abused took up residence under our deck, they offered us suggestions and advice on how to blend him into our home. If you are looking to expand your family by adding a pet or just looking to volunteer some time with animals, I could not recommend a better place!

I had been contemplating getting a dog for myself, as my kids were all young adults and I worked from home, I thought having a dog would be nice company. I did a search on the MHS site and saw a few dogs that peaked my interest. When I got there, there was a scruffy looking dog named SPIRIT, she had a fu man chu mustache and beard. I was told she was a pug/ terrier mix. I took her out back, she was a super sweet dog. I can and got her the next day......she is my Love.
That was a little over 3 years ago. I can honestly say that getting her was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. She now has a pug brother, and the two of them adore each other. Such a Joy to have them in my life. Oh, and she gets regular grooming to keep her crazy hair under control. She always looks like a puppy after getting her hair cut.
Thanks MHS for bringing us together.

I visited the Middletown, NY Humane Society this past summer (2013) based on a referral from my dear friend, Adrianne (volunteer at the humane society). I adopted a 4-5 year old tshizu named Minny. She is the most loving, awesome dog ever!!! The staff, in particular, Brian (Manager), was extremely informative, providing me with guidance and good advice when adopting a rescue dog. This was my first experience so I was very nervous, but he eased my concerns. I highly recommend visiting this humane society and finding your forever dog!!

Back in 2002 we adopted our dog Tori from MHS. She was the only dog there who looked depressed so she became ours. The service we received from MHS in the selection of our dog as well as the professionalism shown during the adoption process was awesome.

I am a volunteer at Middletown NY Humane Society during the spring, summer and fall months. In the winter I volunteer at one in Florida. The employees and volunteers all are very dedicated and no animal leaves this no kill facility without a thorough background check to make sure the home they are going to is qualified to handle the animal and its needs. The animals are treated lovingly, as if they are their own. The facility is very clean and the animals given plenty of exercise and taken out to events to meet the public and help them to get adopted . The health care they are given is outstanding. I adopted my beautiful dog Kaylee from them and she is the love of my life. I am so grateful that they saved this beautiful girl from euthanasia by rescuing her. They accept strays, when other local shelters don't. I am proud to be part of their team.
