Mission: SESS was founded in 1987, bringing together laypersons and professionals to address the serious public health issue of suicide. Colorado''s suicide rate ranks 7th in the nation and as recently as 1998, Weld County had the highest youth suicide rate in Colorado. SESS works to raise public awareness of suicide and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. We also train "gatekeepers" -- people who live or work with people at risk for suicide -- to recognize and respond to the warning signs of suicidal depression. We have a close partnership with the two community mental health agencies in Weld County, which provide crisis intervention and treatment. SESS supports friends and family members of suicide victims in the immediate aftermath of the death and in the weeks and months that follow. By doing so, we not only ease the burden of grief, we prevent one suicide from being followed by others.
Programs: SESS conducts a public awareness campaign, which has served as a model for the state of Colorado. Beginning in 2000, we saw a 40% drop in our suicide rate, largely due to the increase in public awareness. In addition to this campaign, SESS volunteers provide extensive public education and training opportunities to schools, parents and community organizations. By training these individuals to take suicidal threats seriously and get help, we can prevent depression from leading to suicide. When suicide does claim a life, SESS volunteers respond to the family in the immediate aftermath of the death, often arriving with police when the death is discovered. People who have lost a friend or family member to suicide are at greater risk of suicide themselves. Young people are especially at risk of "suicide clusters." By helping family and friends express their grief, anger and guilt in a healthy way, we hope to prevent one suicide from being followed by others. SESS volunteers also facilitate intensive grief educational support groups and monthly drop-in peer support groups for young people and adults. Many of our volunteers came to SESS first as clients who, after they begin their grief process, choose to reach out to help others.
