Mission: The mission of Students Run L.A. is to challenge at-risk secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-seting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of The City of Los Angeles Marathon.
Programs: At each participating school the SRLA "chapter" runs independently under the guidance of a volunteer "teacher/leader" . Our 350 volunteer teachers give an average of 15 hours per week to SRLA. Three times a week, students gather after school to run as a group with their leader(s). Once or twice a month, SRLA brings the 3200 participants together, entering them in community training runs leading up to the marathon. The race schedule is designed to steadily build physical fitness and increase mental and physical endurance while offering students a series of incremental, short-term goals to focus on and achieve, providing them with a chance to experience success and feel the satisfaction that comes with setting a goal and accomplishing it. As a result of this change in attitude the students begin to focus on their lives and on their futures. Their grades in school improve, they make plans to graduate from high school and they make post-graduation plans. Students Run L.A. is thus having a significant impact on the students who participate and, as a result, on the community at large.
