So far I had 3 stages of experiences at Strive. I started off as a third grader attending Strive and continued until I entered middle school. By the time I entered high school I decided to do my required community service at Strive as well and was more than happy to help around the program I grew up with. Eventually I ended up getting hired by Mr. Tetreau (Jim) and Mr. Anderson (Don) due to the work I presented. Ever since 11th grade I've been proudly employed at Strive and I've grasped so many learning experiences as well from cleaning to using power tools. Even when the time comes when I have to leave, I will always keep Strive close to me and hold everything I learned here dearly.
I volunteered at Strive during my Senior year in High School. I believe this experience prepared me for my future employment. While working with Mr. Anderson, I learned punctuality goes a very long way. I developed a strong work ethic, a characteristic which continues to be vital in my life today. Strive is like a secrete garden in our community. Looking from the outside you can never imagine how beautiful a place it really is. For those of us who have been lucky to attend the program, Strive is our home away from home.
As someone who's volunteered at Strive, I can honestly say that my time spent here was a wonderful experience. The staff and teachers are all on board with one goal in mind: Prepare these kids for a wonderful life. They focus on academics and have a formal classroom setting, but it's so much more than math & language arts - it's about helping students become the best that they can be AKA Strive for greatness! Their affirmation: "Don't let your circumstances define you" really struck a cord with me. I wish I had learned that lesson as a kid! They really do great work in the South LA community, the families and students are overall wonderful. Keep up the great work Strive! Thank you!
I've seen first-hand the incredible results that Strive has produced. They do so much for not only students, but the community as a whole. They offer so many outlets that these kids and families so desperately need - Girl Scouts with a STEM program, Youth Entrepreneurs, Teen Night, ESL classes for the parents/families and more! The teachers and staff put so much time and energy into this program, the community is beyond lucky to have you all. Thank you, Strive!
