On the streets of downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado, there are people without homes like many other metropolitan areas. There are many great people who help the homeless and will do as much as they can to make sure they have enough to eat, warm clothes, shelter when bad weather happens, and even try to find homes and jobs for them whenever possible. But did you realize that many of the people on the streets also have pets?

The pets of the homeless are protectors to these folks but are also their family in many cases. And, when times are tough, these pets lack food, water, and shelter, as well as standard vaccines and immunizations against common dog and cat diseases.

My wife, Dr. Evelyn Naber-Fitzpatrick, volunteers as a veterinarian with Street Petz every week she can, coordinating with other volunteers in the area helping the homeless. She takes food, toys, leashes, but also goes so far as to offer rabies vaccinations and puppy and kitten immunizations whenever possible. Dr. Fitz has a great group of vet techs and concerned citizens helping her in this cause.

None of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of Street Petz founder Dr. Youkey, who is at the heart of it all.

They're always looking for more volunteers, donations of food, toys, and vaccines and can use the help so they can help others.
