I had never in my life been up close and personal with homeless people, and was reluctant to donate my time with Straight Street Orlando, because I was "too busy" and "too tired" and "too whatever" until one Tuesday in July I didn't have any more excuses, and my husband and I showed up. WOW. We were so moved, and impressed with the organization, structure, and efficiency of the whole process. I have tried to encourage others to join my husband and me, and have been pleased that my children, my parents, and my coworkers have joined in to volunteer with me. If we truly want to make a difference in the lives of the homeless we must feed their bellies and their souls. This is what PJ and Straight Street Orlando tries to do every week.
Helping feed the homeless and see how they appreciate us being there had been more of a blessing to me then those I am down there to help. Me and my Bible study cover the meal the 4th Tuesday of the month. This organization has taken several homeless man and given them a job. You need to check Straight Street Orlando out.
I have had the opportunity to help this amazing organization by cooking, serving and donating. SSO is doing so much to bring awareness to those who would no sooner be forgotten in the city of Orlando. Every Tuesday, Straight Street Orlando no only shares food with our homeless friends, they share a message. That message is spoken in a way that can give them something to relate to and maybe inspire them to seek out and cry out to God. SSO is amazing in the fact that it is helping to get people involved. To show others that the homeless are not bad people. They are just people that have been put in less than ideal situations. With the goals and plans of SSO, there is hope to help get them back on their feet through the knowing of our Lord and a constant compassion from the team of people who make the organization go. PJ Charles is an amazing man of God and has an outstanding vision for what he wants Straight Street Orlando to be. If the City would band together to help instead of condemn and label the homeless population, it could help lower or even end homelessness in Orlando.
I have had the opportunity to cook, serve, and donate to this wonderful ministry from it's inception which has changed how I think, feel, and act about others who are less fortunate than me. God has also blessed me with the opportunity to serve with my family; my husband, son, and ex-husband who have remained faithful to the ministry by being available to serve every week. It is a life changing experience.
Straight Street has impacted many lives - including my own! I love this group and serving with them is serving with family. The way this group comes together is amazing.
This is my weekly REALITY CHECK ! Reminds me that what we have is not ours, but Gods and that it is our job to share Gods word with those who may not otherwise receive it. Feeding is always secondary to Gods word every Tuesday night... But the joy and gratitude you see on the faces we serve... Is what keeps me coming back. I feel blessed to have this opportunity of share and serve in this capacity. THANK STRAIGHT STREET ORLANDO!
SSO has changed so many lives of volunteers snd of those being served. The love is real so our homeless brothers and sisters know that they are more than a face they are family!! Serving hope by all means and loving it!!
Amazing people and always a good time getting to love on all our friends out there! It's changed my life!
When going out to join Straight Street Orlando in serving, everyone is welcomed like family. This team is has positive high energy and is making a wonderful impact on our community. They are all very loved!
This group is absolutely amazing. And trust me I am not blowing smoke here. This organization steps out and helps those on the street and changes the lives of its volunteers. Straight Street Orlando is a God given gift to the city of Orlando and I am so grateful to be able to be a part of it. So many people are willing to give the shirts off their backs, or anything that they can just to help our friends who are living on the street. And its not just every once in a while, its every week. There is so much love for everyone involved that to be part of this organization is to be part of a real family - Gods family. Theres no better place to be. :)
Someone once asked me why I got out and volunteer with Straight Street Orlando on a weekly basis, and I stopped and said the first thing that came to mind, which was that there was nothing better that I could be doing on a Tuesday night. And I still stand by that. I have been serving food and volunteering at events for the homeless in downtown Orlando since before Straight Street even existed. And I will stand by Straight Street, because of the amazing organization it is, til the day, heaven forbid, it or I no longer exist. We go out and help these people, not the drunk bad people that most people assume that the homeless are, but the good people who just need help, the people who are just like you and me that may not have been as lucky or had as many breaks as you or I have. We help them in every way we possibly can. We watch these people grow and become stronger and we happily watch them leave cause we know that they have successfully found a way off the street. We give them food, we give them clothes, we wash the clothes they already have, but most of all we give them love, hope, and faith that they can make it through the rough times and that things will get better. And truthfully compared to volunteering with a group that is capable of all that, I am not sure anyone could be doing anything any better on a Tuesday night.
Straight Street Orlando is a very great organization to be a part of. Not only are you serving food to those who are down on their luck, you are also able to use your gifts and talents to impact a life. Whether it is praying for someone, listening to their story, or just being there for them; you are always needed somewhere. Straight Street Orlando changed my life and left an impact on me.

I started serving with SSO from the very beginning and became a board member about a year later. It's difficult to find words to adequately describe how amazing it is to serve with this organization. When participating in an event serving the homeless, there is no distinction between the homeless, and those serving. There is an understanding that we are are all humankind and ALL valuable; there are friendships built, struggles shared, and prayers of encouragement for anyone in need. SSO and it's reputation of caring for others comes from it's background rooted in what Christ did on the cross. We have all made mistakes and wrong choices, and we serve out of grateful hearts for the grace Jesus has shown to all of us. The best way to fully understand SSO is by experiencing it for yourself.
It all started with a Facebook message. Heating up pizzas and trays of food. Got the GirlScout Troop involved. It was a good feeling to give back to the community and helping serve others. Straight Street Orlando is a wonderful organization and deserves this award!
Straight Street Orlando is a wonderful organization. We feed the homeless and use the words of God to provide hope, love and inspiration to help the homeless change their life. My bible study group provides the food to serve on the average 300 homeless, once a month. My husband, daughter and myself, serve every Tuesday for over one year. It has been a life changing experience for me. My family likes to walk around and just talk with our homeless friends. Many of them welcome a warm smile and conversation, as most people (out of fear) will not talk or look directly at a homeless person. We also provide clothing, warm blankets, and even wash their clothes once a month. This is a fantastic organization and has touched the lives of so many of us that volunteer.
My 15 year old son and I volunteer almost weekly with Straight Street Orlando. This group serves a good night of teaching of Jesus' love for us, as well as fills many hungry peoples' appetites. The volunteers serve the homeless that come looking for a few words of Truth and a little bit of dinner. The interesting thing is that my son and I have been drawn into this group because we get so much out of the teaching and serving of others. There is music, fun worship songs, teaching of the Gospels, fellowship and friends. It is an interesting process to step out of my comfort zone to reach out to a homeless person one on one. Turns out they are the same as I am... Straight Street provides benches for the folks to sit and relax, as well as a place of comfort and love. It's a great group, accomplishing great things. Come join us! Straight Street Orlando! You Rock!
Straight Street Orlando or SSO as they are known really love on people they always have a heart on. They listen to the concerns of those struggling in the streets. When I got involved I notice that the would go out and feed rain or shine. They help clean the homeless clothes and help them as much as they can get back on theirs feet.
Since I started to volunteer with Straight Street Orlando I and many have come to enjoy what it done through this ministry. This oranization goes above and beyond to assist those struggling in this economy. By providing a hot meal, doing the laundry or just listening. Straight Street Orlando does not have an income coming in unless genereous people donate the money or item needed to take care of the people of Orlando and the sourrounding area. If the person needs a 7 day bus pass, they provide it .They bring in agency that provide guidance and counseling to those that need it. They collect clothes to hand out to those that need it. The Excutive Director Pernell Charles has a BIG heart and Passion for those in need and that why I give my time to Straight Street Orlando. Straight Street Orlando goes to where their is a need. They are not a political group and they try to keep away from itf possible. I have learn the Straight Street Orlando has a heart for God and a heart for people and truly enjoy what they do with their time. I would recommend friends and family to give to this organization there time and finance.
Review from Guidestar
My first time coming to SSO I only knew a few people; in fact, the friend who was on me to come couldn't make it that night, but I went anyway. Upon arrival, I was met with friendly faces and smiles. Many from the leaders and volunteers and many from the people we were there to serve. From day 1, I was hooked. It was definently out of my comfort zone, but I knew that God was working there. I usually found myself at the drink station filling cups before the meal started and walking around with pitchers providing refils. Other ways that volunteers serve are donating and disctributing clothing & hygene products, preparing, heating and serving food, ministering through music, sharing a message, praying with the individuals, collecting quarters & detergant and working on laundry day. I've probably forgotten something, but just know that when you come to help, you might be uncomfortable with the thought of not knowing many people, but there will be plenty of jobs to do and faces to welcome you there.
Straight Street Orlando is a ministry that does more than just feed the homeless in Orlando on Tuesday nights. SSO feeds, prays, ministers, encourages, clothes, and more our homeless friends. One Saturday a month we open a laundry facility to clean any clothing they have. We host garage sales with the donations we receive to raise money for the food costs. We take a lot of the donations we receive and give them to the homeless. We also help others with needs, we have given clothing and food to families in the Orlando area that have fallen on hard times. We encourage our volunteers spiritually and have a wonderful volunteer family. There are so many ways to get involved. Come on down on a Tuesday night and see for yourself, you will never be the same!
such a caring and loving organization we are like a family
Since I started this ministry in 2009, I have come to see amazing changes in many lives, especially my own. We have learned so much by helping the homeless of our city. Our volunteer team continues to grow as does our desire to reach as many of those in need as we can. We have plans to start another food share on the east side of Orlando and have a vision that includes addiction counseling and transitional housing.
