Mission: The Stowers Institute, which opened the doors of its $300 million research campus in late 2000, was founded by Jim and Virginia Stowers, two cancer survivors who have dedicated their fortune to supporting the basic research needed to provide long-term solutions to gene-based diseases. Initially, the Institute is focusing on research that seeks to identify and understand the genes and proteins that govern early development of the organism. Since malfunctioning developmental genes and proteins cause many diseases in later life, research conducted in this area will fulfill the Institute's vision of achieving medically important discoveries.
