Mission: To preserve open space in stow, massachusetts.
Programs: Stewardship - sct actively stewards several conservation properties in town, monitoring for encroachments and maintaining trails for use by the general public. This year also we hired a professional forester to provide a forest management plan for our newest property. We employed our volunteer "stew crew" on 10 events including trail creation and maintenance and helping the town of stow with cleanup of a public park site.
land conservation and outreach - the trust acquires or facilitates acquisition of land in stow, ma, to preserve it as open space. Trust members work with land owners, local governments, and other land trusts to provide expertise in planning, organizing, and presenting cases for future land acquisitions or conservation restrictions. This year the trust kicked off our save stow's farms initiative with a bid to save two local farms from development, carver hill orchards, and small farm. Our land protection specialists worked with the landowners and stow town officials to construct a deal for conservation restrictions on both properties, which were enthusiastically supported in the may town meeting. Fundraising to complete the projects is ongoing.
education - sct seeks to educate the public about the importance of preserving land for the future via various community events and awareness-generating activities. This year we completed phase one of our enhanced nature trail for kids in one of our properties, installing a set of musical instruments along the trail. We also conducted various hikes, including a birding walk, a cross-country ski event, and a snowman-making hike for kids.
