A remarkable collection of history that reminds us of this town's beginnings. Promotes continued education with weekly lectures and meetings. New centralized location will enable this gem to be noticed more by the public.
It has been my pleasure as a Museum Docent for the last ten years to help the Museum present Stone Harbor’s history to anyone walking through the Museum’s door. Now in a new and larger space, the Museum has been able to expand our displays. It is exciting to see people appreciate learning more about Stone Harbor and share their experiences and love of our Island.
As a docent, I have enjoyed visitors stopping in to tell us their stories and to help them find information and pictures of their homes, families and stores that have been replaced with new businesses. We remind them to stop next year when they are in town to see our new displays. We are always a work in progress.
Was impressed with all the old pictures of the past 100+ years. The then and now pictures of old houses were very interesting. Glad the museum is keeping our past alive and available for all to see and cherish.
Stone Harbor Museum gives an accurate picture of what Stone Harbor was like through the decades. A walk through history which appeals to visitors of all ages.
An excellent resource for history, the Stone Harbor Museum offers a wealth of information to residents and tourists alike!
Congratulations to the Stone Harbor Museum on opening a beautiful facility! It is a must see for everyone who visits or lives in Stone Harbor. I have personally recommended visits to my friends. My family loves to visit and see the new displays. Bruce, Teri, Randy, Patty, Kathy, and Bob – you did a great job. I wish you much success!
like other nonprofits of this type they have a specific mission. The problem is having the ability to maximize the limited available resources. This organization has reached out to the community they serve to seek volunteer expert advice on all matters. As an architect, I have been brought in on many occasions to help with finding a new home that could better serve the museum's mission. Their ability to keep to their mission while serving as a valuable asset to the community has been outstanding.
Great collection of pieces! Our favorites were the first SHBP life guard uniforms!
From a collection of artifacts and archives crowded in a century old cottage unsuitable for preservation of our borough history, a group of dedicated volunteer board members have managed to purchase a property well-suited to the needs of a museum and in a much more conspicuous location. Necessary work to repurpose this former art gallery to become a museum has been done by these dedicated board members. The increased number of visitors during this first season at the new location has indicated that the mission of the Stone Harbor Museum to collect, preserve and display the history of the town is being accomplished. It has been a rewarding experience to be part of this vibrant group of volunteers.
Great museum focused on displaying the history of this seashore gem! The leaders and volunteers are dedicated to an excellent visitor experience. The summer lectures focus on topics of local interest. It's a great place to visit while on vacation!
I was working as a docent in our new home last week when an older lady walked into the museum with a favorite picture she wanted to share with us. It turned out that she had been coming to our shore town for 86 of her 92 years and she was thrilled to see the museum. Even though the museum was crowded with visitors on that rainy day I was able to sit with her and listen to her tell of walking the boardwalk (washed away in ’44) as a teenager and being told to put out their cigarettes by Coast Guardsmen because German subs could spot them. She had a dozen other great stories and she offered to sit for an oral history next week.
It doesn’t get much better than that.
The new larger location at 9410 Second Ave is impressive. Great interesting exhibits of old Stone Harbor. A must see!
Review from Guidestar
Again this year the Museum is having 5 Wednesday evening lectures of interesting topics. These are free and open to all to enjoy the unique Stone Harbor past.
Can't wait until the Museum reopens in a few months. Great place to review old Stone Harbor life.
A wonderful place to see & learn the past of Stone Harbor. Charming but very small. They sure could use more space to exhibit their many interesting items. Don't miss this.
