Causes: Arts & Culture, History Museums
Mission: The purpose of stockton historical maritime musem is to provide, maintain, and manage a maritime museum dedicated to the cultural heritage and historical recognition of the downtown waterfront of stockton, california.
Programs: The year of 2016 was another successful year of great progress for our museum in many areas. It was the third year that our instructor has been working with students four days per week on our on board restoration work. Over 200 students participated from san joaquin county schools building futures academy, project navigate and constructive change, as well as community service students from various high schools county wide participated in 2016. Adult volunteer ranks continued to grow, with saturday work parties ranging from 10 to 24 volunteers, and weekday volunteers averaging 4 per day. Major projects undertaken and completed were weather shelter compartment, cic was substantially completed with new flooring, all insulation panels restored, paint and all major instruments installed. Restoration of the pilothouse was completed, with all appropriate systems and gauges restored and installed. Primary among these were the restored helm unit, captains chair, chart table and communications gear. New projects undertaken were the ships office, engine room catwalks, ships future museum space and future gift shop. . On memorial day, 24 active duty minesweeper sailors of the mcm-4 uss champion visited the lucid for a very productive work party. Carpentry was accomplished in the magazine, blower rooms, and watertight bulkheads were repaired in both engine rooms. Following this special work party, the lucid received her first award, from the captain of the champion, honoring our museum's efforts to save their ships sole remaining predecessor. It is now proudly displayed in our officers wardroom. In september, 4 of our directors attended the historic naval ships annual conference in corpus christi, texas on board the historic uss lexington. We participated in workshops involving all aspects of historic ship museum operations, fundraising, social media outreach and public relations. At this conference, our top volunteer was recognized with the "historic preservation and exhibition award", for outstanding contribution to our museum. This was quite an accomplishment for our rather small and new museum to be recognized with such a valuable volunteer. The year ended in december with our annual volunteer appreciation dinner, where over 60 attended a fun dinner and program of video and awards presentations, blooper reels, and music provided by another of our valuable volunteers. Everyone was honored for their service, thanked for their support, and excited to tackle new projects and milestones in 2017.
