Mission: Our association is a way for small state-wide gun violence prevention advocacy groups across the country to share legislative and capacity building ideas. We also provides representation for these state organizations in meetings and planning with other national gun violence prevention organization. Examples of work in 2023 include operational support for our affiliate in Maine, the Maine Gun Safety Coalition, and sending rapid response resources after the horrific mass shooting in Lewiston. We successfully hosted the States United annual meeting in Washington D.C. with special guests from the newly created White House Office of GVP (OGVP). Following this initial engagement, our Board Chair attended the OGVP launch of Safer States Initiatives with over 100 state legislators advocating for gun safety laws at both the city, county and state level.
Target demographics: advocacy, education and communications to advance gun violence awareness and prevention.
Geographic areas served: support of 31 state affiliates across the country
Programs: Our major operating program is running an association which keeps our members in contact to share best practices and legislative ideas and to develop a common voice. We maintain a joint WEB site with our education fund, have frequent telephone conferences, communicate by email and email newsletter. We also have a member who acts as an advocate for state organizations when they can not travel to meet with Congressional members in DC.
