Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Human Services, Thrift Shops

Mission: We provide material and spiritual charity and work for social justice for all people.

Programs: Provision of transitional housing for families in need. For over 20 years the st. Vincent de paul society of juneau has focused on local homeless issues. In that time, we have built 15 transitional housing apartments for homeless families with children, eleven apartments for single homeless disabled, 29 apartments for low-income households and 24 apartments for low-income seniors (smith hall, not shown here). More than 100 families are housed or kept from eviction by the society each year. In addition to managing its own housing, the organization manages two other low income housing programs, smith hall senior housing and channel view apartments. The program expenses also include costs associated with merging another housing organization. On january 1, 2014, the organization completed merger with housing first. Upon merger, the organization took over two additional apartment projects for lower income tenants.

provision of basic needs in the form of clothing, food, monetary aid and shelter to the indigent population in juneau and all southeast alaska. The organization provides cash stipends to those who are unable to make ends meet by paying either short or longer term rent support, money for utility bills, emergency medical or dental procedures, travel and local transporation and food vouchers. In addition, anyone needing clothing or household items can obtain items from the thrift store. At the end of fy 2017 we had 127 households either owned or managed under our control. During the thanksgiving and christmas holidays we provided holiday food baskets or gifts under our adopt-a-family program to approximately 700 juneau households.

cost associated with operation of the thrift store that sells donated items such as household goods books and furniture and provisions. The thrift store is the economic engine that makes possible all the charitable work of st. Vincent de paul. It provides a channel for the community to donate and recycle clothing, furniture, electronics and household items for resale at modest prices. The thrift store operates largely on volunteer labor. The store contributes about 85% of the discretionary income we use to subsidize all our other programs. The store also provides clothing and household items free of charge to those in need.
