Mission: The st. Simons land trust was organized to (1) conserve land which has natural, recreational, scenic, historic, or educational value, (2) increase public awareness and educate the general public about land conservation, and (3) develop closer cooperation between public and private entities in planning a more livable community for future generations.
Programs: In september 2012, the land trust acquired cannon's point preserve - a 608-acre tract of land on the north end of st. Simons island featuring mature maritime forest, six miles of marsh shore line including deep water frontage, and many other beautiful examples of coastal georgia ecology. In 2016, the land trust worked on several improvements to cannon's point and added features for visitors. The land trust also began the process of constructing restrooms for visitors to use. The vision of the land trust is to protect and conserve 2000 acres on st. Simons island. Each year, the land trust continues to acquire more land to move closer towards that goal. In august 2015, the trust reached an agreement to purchase three parcels of land consisting of approximately 260 acres of the property known as musgrove plantation on st. Simons island. The plan is to purchase the parcels in phases with funding expected to come from a combination of government grants and local donors. On may 17, 2016, the trust completed the purchase of musgrove plantation phase i, consisting of 58. 4 acres. The other two parcels are scheduled to be acquired in the two subsequent years. This will be a space open to the public for various nature activities and enjoyment.
