Causes: Arts & Culture, Theater
Mission: Recharge our imaginative, intuitive, emotional core, and rekindle our shared consciousness. Projects include full productions of plays (both new and previously produced), fully staged book-in-hand productions, readings that employ minimal movement and staging, and experimental workshops for members of the theater community, with special emphasis on engaging students in the greater washington dc area.
Programs: In 2014, the company presented two full productions: the wedding dress, by nelson rodrigues; and kwaidan, by lafcadio hearn, adapted by richard henrich and izumi ashizawa. An approximate total of 2,000 audience members attended. Both productions received the recommended production honor from the prestigious helen hayes awards. The production of the wedding dress was part of a successful outreach program to the brazilian community in washington, dc. Spooky action theater partnered with the brazil embassy on the production as well as a small cultural festival featuring cooking and music workshops and readings beyond the mainstage production. Kwaidan was part of a successful outreach to the japanese community in washington, dc, and offered a unique site-specific form of theater in which the audience was immersed in the action and led throughout the building to follow the action of the play. Spooky action's new works in action program for development of new plays continues to see growth in its third year of operation and is now committed to opening submission windows twice per year, hosting 8 or more table readings per year, and producing 4-6 workshop productions per year. New works in action provides paid artistic opportunities for many local actors and directors, fosters local playwright development, and brings the development process to an interested audience base.
