Mission: Our mission is to increase the participation of Blacks and Latinos in music schools, as professional musicians, and as classical music audiences, to administer youth development initiatives in underserved communities through music education, and to promote the creation, performance, and preservation of works by Black and Latino composers.
Programs: Since the first Sphinx Competition, the organization has grown to include five programming areas: ● Artist Development- focuses on professional opportunities for young artists, encompasses the Sphinx Competition and Sphinx Symphony as well as our three scholarship initiatives. ● Sphinx Preparatory Music Institute @ Wayne State University and Overture Division- Sphinx Prep benefits Detroit area youths through yearlong classes in performance, music theory and music history. Overture is the feeder program for Sphinx Prep, providing free violin lessons and instruments to young people in underserved communities in Detroit and Flint, Michigan. ● Sphinx Performance Academy offers intensive summer training to aspiring Black and Latino musicians ages 12-17. ● Sphinx Presents! supports Sphinx solo artists and ensembles in performance and exposure opportunities including the Sphinx Artist Series at Carnegie Hall, the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra tour and the Harlem Quartet. ● Sphinx Legacy Project- creates, promotes, disseminates and preserves works by Black and Latino composers through the Sphinx Commissioning Consortium, the Sphinx Library and Classical Connections, an in-school curriculum initiative.
