Causes: Special Olympics, Sports
Mission: The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Results: Special Olympics Pennsylvania Interscholastic Unified Sports (IUS) is a fully-inclusive co-ed high school sports program which successfully facilitates social inclusion by bringing together a proportional number of students with and without intellectual disabilities on teams for training and competition. Our Interscholastic Unified Sports Program is now active in 110 high schools, 6 middle and elementary schools in 21 counties. In addition there will be 27 new schools coming onboard by the end 2018. Healthy Communities - Healthy Communities is a recognition program for the Special Olympics Movement made possible by the Golisano Foundation. The goal is to increase access to healthcare and improve health status of people with intellectual disabilities around the world. SOPA now trains nearly 20,000 athletes who participate in 21 Olympic-type sports and three emerging sports at more than 260 local, sectional, and state level competitions.

Programs: Although the main vehicle of support for athletes is through sports competitions, Special Olympics offers additional programs and services such as Athlete Leadership Programs, Healthy Athletes, Healthy Communities, Healthy Habits, Interscholastic and Traditional Unified Sports, Young Athletes, and Motor Activity Training Program (MATP) to ensure the athletes are receiving the full benefits of their participation.
