The SMRT team is a diverse medical response team that provides care in austere environments including disaster response, tactical medical coverage, and mine rescue services. Members of the team includes logistic specialists, medical personnel, and additional support personnel. If you are interested in participating in a group that responds to the above types of emergencies, there is likely a role for you on the team.

SMRT has been a tremendous expierence and a huge part of my personal life.
The unity of the diverse disciplines is extremly rare.
This association has enabled me to participate in emergency response not only in the U.S. but around the world.

I volunteered with this group in the 1980s - 1990s and returned to volunteer with them again a few years ago. I have participated in local as well as international medical responses with SMRT. The team has educational/training activities that include training exercises in coal mines as well as exercises with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. These exercises not only help prepare you to respond to disasters, but also allow you to get to know those fellow volunteers with whom you will be responding.

An incredible group of professionals from various fields of study, both medical and non-medical, who volunteer time to prepare for the worst but have a lot of fun in the process.

I have been on several deployments with this team over the past 15 years. The teamwork, expertise and esprit de corps is second to none. Although a medical team, physicians, mid-level providers, RN's, paramedics, EMT's and non-medical support personnel all work on the tasks at hand without regard to "rank", title, education or experience. This includes patient care but also the dirty job of set-up, tear-down and clean up. We all learn from each other whether its training or a mission. Everyone maintains their certifications and volunteers their time on a very limited budget.
Great Medicine in Bad Places!
I am an Emergency Physician and am proud to be associated with SMRT and my team members.

I have been involved with the SMRT for several years, it is a very under utilized service that needs consideration in the future.

One of the greatest not-for-profits that few people have heard of, SMRT provides state-of-the-art specialized medical in the harsh environments of disaster sites. There's also a tremendous level of cameraderie, making the team feel more like a family, rather than just a group of colleagues
