i've been a part of Spark the Wave for 5 years now, and I've grown more passionate about their work with every year. Every member of the staff is so energetic, and they put an insane amount of effort into seeing the mission to fruition. The high point of the organization is its intensive weeklong camp, known as Wave Week, where the staff offers workshop-styled classes to teach middle schoolers and high schoolers how to become effective leaders in their communities while simultaneously mentoring them as they develop their own community service projects. The organization is always self-evaluating and adjusting to ensure that it is always proceeding toward its goal of inspiring teen volunteers. I am so happy that I have the opportunity to be involved with Spark the Wave and think that everyone should find a way to get involved.
I started as a camper attending Spark the Wave, and then became a staff member the following year. It is now my third year on staff and I couldn't imagine my summer without it. I have seen this camp make significant changes in the lives of its campers. They are taught lessons on leadership, communication and understanding the cultural difference we encounter in our daily lives. At the end of the week, campers leave with a thoroughly planned service project which they can bring back and execute in their own community. To see these kids so motivated to help out an organization or cause they are passionate about is truly inspiring. During the years I have volunteered with this organization, I have made friendships I know will last a life time. I would encourage any family to send there kids to this camp for an unforgettable week.
