Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: S.P.A.R.R.O. is organized for the following purposes: 1. To provide loving homes for purebred as well as mostly pure mixed breeds of sound temperament Labradors, Goldens, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers that are rescued from shelters or pounds, which are strays, unclaimed by owners after published notice, or that are relinquished by their owners to S.P.A.R.R.O. Such dogs will be given proper medical attention, updated immunizations, (except for special circumstances as determined by a Veterinarian); carefully evaluated and relocated into compatible homes where assurances can be made that proper care will be continued. 2. To educate the public about the breed, the need for obedience lessons for all dogs and to advise and/or suggest further referrals where medical or behavioral problems exist. 3. To encourage, assist and provide guidelines to other retriever fanciers to form rescue programs. 4. To encourage responsible care for all dogs through public education.

Programs: Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue has been operating as an incorporated nonprofit organization in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania since January 20, 2003. It was organized for the purpose of removing unwanted Retrievers from inappropriate situations and rehoming them, educating the public about responsible dog ownership, and providing a resource for canine owners regarding the proper care and treatment of their dogs. Activities: Acquisition and adoption of Retrievers - Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue provides rescue shelter and care for Retrievers received from animal control agencies, humane societies, police, veterinarian services and individuals. In order to prevent euthanization of these animals, Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue provides veterinary care such as examinations, blood tests, x-rays, and spay or neutering to the adoptive Retriever as needed. Sw. Pa.Retriever Rescue locates permanent, loving homes for the foster dogs through advertising, our web sites and referrals. Multiple volunteers participate in this ongoing activity. World Wide Web site maintenance - Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue believes that the presence of our web sites www.sparro.petfinder.org and www.sparro.org strongly positions us to promote our mission, assist in rehoming dogs, and promote fundraising avenues. Moreover it clearly presents to the public our dedication to animal welfare, rescue, and education. Two volunteers maintain the web sites on a daily and ongoing basis. Educational Material - Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue provides information about the breeds, proper treatment and training, counseling, and referrals. Multiple volunteers participate in this ongoing activity. Owner Assistance - Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue assists owners wishing to place their dogs themselves, provides resources and avenues to find their lost dogs, counsels owners who are experiencing unusual behavioral issues, and who are experiencing grief due to loss or death of a dog. Multiple volunteers provide these services. Fundraising - Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue In the past Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue has relied on direct donations raised through the individuals actions of volunteers. We have begun to raise funds through organized efforts on a project by project basis. Regional volunteers participate in this ongoing activity. Public Awareness - Sw. Pa. Retriever Rescue provides education to the public about the prevention of cruelty to animals, proper pet care, and special characteristics of specific breeds. This is achieved through informational seminars and forums with the public. Several volunteers participate in this ongoing activity.
