Programs: Desert waters program: to protect and restore streams and wetlands ofthe southwest. 1: spearheaded advocacy for restoring rio grande to ecological health; represented river advocates in multiple fora;2: continued to plan, design and construct habitat restoration projects to benefit native fish; 3: organized 16th annual raft the rio event, connecting people to the riogrande, with over 300 people participating on 90 rafts
desert lands and wildlife program: to ensure the long-term survival ofnative wildlife in ecologically significant numbers across theirhistoric range in the southwest. 1: led efforts to ban wildlife-killing contests and reform wildlife management in new mexico;2: continued organizing to protect new mexicos otero mesa from oil and gas drilling and hardrock mining; 3: continued advocacy, outreach and education to support recovery of themexican gray wolf in the southwest; organized significant public involvement in agency rule-making process.
education for a sustainable society: to create an informed and activeconstituency for biodiversity conservation in the southwest. 1: operated public environmental center in downtown las cruces withinformational exhibits, artspace, ecoshop and a 500-gallon rio grandeaquarium featuring native fish;2: led 500 people on 20 guided natural history outings;3: sponsored a variety of public presentations, films and workshops;4: published a quarterly newletter and sent out bi-weekly enewsletters;5: operated a rooftop demonstration photovoltaic system on the building.
