If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Do not adopt from Lisa, she is terrible at communicating and has potential families waiting hours to meet her for a dog. We adopted a dog with anxiety issues and she told us he would come with an impact crate. She showed up hours late and didn’t have the crate with her. We contacted her Monday to get the crate so we could work with him and she decided that our lifestyle was no longer what she wanted for the dog. She took the dog back and is refusing to refund us our money, not responding to text messages. We will be seeking legal action against her, because I guarantee we are not the only family she has done this to.

I encourage others who are thinking about fostering or adopting to please read these reviews. We have fostered for Lisa a few times and got the last dog we fostered adopted but have severed our relationship with her for a MULTITUDE of reasons. The first one is that she is extremely unorganized. We would tell her we need to return the foster because we were going out of town and she would "forget" and tell us that she couldn't take the dog back right now and needed us to do something with it. Luckily the times she has done this we were able to bring the dog with us even though not ideal. Lisa can be extremely rude and sassy and while we tried to be understanding of her- she is not understanding of others. The dog that we got adopted out was not up to date on its vaccines and flea. tick, heartworm. She told the adopter this and just stated that they needed to get it done. Why would you adopt out a dog that is over due on everything? The adopted had the dog three weeks before she was messaging us and the adopter that she was taking them to small claims court to get the dog back because the dog hadn't been vaccinated. Lisa did not care if the dog was up to date while in her care but cared once she adopted the dog out. Lisa is genuinely the worst. Please do not foster or donate to her. While she is doing good work for these animals she is not a kind person and should leave others to run rescues.

I adopted a dog through them and was not given the full medical history. Although it is not a huge thing, I was never made aware the dog had worms under the care of the owner of the rescue. The dogs were given a de-wormer (which I also have no record of and I have asked multiple times for and have yet to receive), but a follow up to check that everything was cleared up was never done. A follow up is standard proper care for a dog with worms. The rescue did not take the appropriate steps to make sure the dogs were healthy.

The dog that I adopted now has a rough case of intestinal parasites because they did not give proper vet care to him when he was taken in. They saw worms and did not check for anything else. The de-wormer medicine does not do anything for parasites. This dog has been suffering with this for weeks under the rescues care. Had they done a standard fecal sample when he was taken in they would have seen this right away.

I would also suggest truly reading the contract and reaching out to other shelters to see what their contracts say. The contract that Southern Paws sends is unlike any other contracts shelters use to adopt out there dogs.

I want to say do not adopt from here, but the dogs here need better homes. Do your research and look up the owner and other adoption contracts. Things do not add up here and they do not disclose all information or have the animals seen by a vet before they adopt them out.

Lisa G. was highly unprofessional as a foster. She claimed she was fostering 5+ dogs in her home which is not fair to dogs that have to stay in kennels most of the day without being socialized or walked properly. DO NOT RESCUE FROM SOUTHERN TAILS in Charleston. Do not get your hopes up on a dog, they aren't rehoming dogs. Traumatizing dogs and unwilling to work with families who want to adopt. You should have a good bye protocol instead of not responding at all!! DO NOT TRUST. SOUTHERN TAILS FOR PRECIOUS PAWS! It is not a rescue it's a forever prison for abused dogs. Do not support this "non-profit"!

I wish I had read these reviews earlier. Do your research before adopting from this group. People are being told that dogs are "kid friendly" and "get along well with other dogs" when in fact they don't!!! It's sad. There are a lot of dogs in one home and they are not getting trained, leash walks, etc.

I’d give zero stars if I could. Ghosted after initial communication and agreement to meet, messages unanswered then Lisa happened to pick up the phone. It was obvious Lisa had no intention of letting us adopt a dog that was perfect for us, She’s simultaneously pleading on social media that her home was over capacity and so were her fosters and she needs to adopters, but then looks for the most inane reason to determine you aren’t worthy of adopting one of her dogs.

Lisa is apparently the expert on everyone’s dog, and if you don’t share the same beliefs as her about things like dog parks or boarding, you are out of luck. I am not a first time dog owner, and I’m not naive—something is off. The story about why the dog was in rescue changed each time I communicated with her. The worst part of all of this is an amazing dog has to continue living in her overflowing home while it could have been adjusting to our awesome home.

I had a completely different experience with another local rescue, but I could see it wasn’t a good fit for our dog. I donated to their organization because I know it takes a lot of time, effort, blood, sweat and tears to do what they do, and they were wonderful to deal with.

Really don’t think this woman should be allowed to do what she’s doing. Do your research—plenty of amazing rescues in the Charleston area that won’t waste your time or call you an awful owner because of differing opinions.

I don’t think this organization knows how to handle animals and very unprofessional.. I’d avoid and seek out an organization with more reputable resources and skilled animal providers.

My husband and I adopted our dog Sadie through Southern Paws at an adoption event. Sadie was rescued from a horrific situation and might not be alive today were it not for Lisa. Sadie was 6 when we got her. She was so traumatized, scared and afraid of everyone and everything. She had heartworm when we got her but medical expenses for it were covered by Southern Tales and she is happy and healthy today. We've always had a cat, she is our first dog, and they get along so well. I can't say enough great things about Lisa. She has a huge heart and a love for rescues unlike any others I've ever seen. We are forever grateful to have sweet Sadie as a member of our family. Thank you Lisa.

If I could give 0 stars I certainly would. The main issue here is Lisa. She should not be in charge of anything regarding being in touch with people or animals as far as I'm concerned. I was trying to adopt my first dog with them and everything was going great. Until I was told everything was good and then all communication stopped. I found out this was because of a personal dislike for my sisters husband who happened to be a foster for them. After weeks of attempting to find out when I would be able to take ownership and bring the dog home I finally heard that answer. So not only did I lose the opportunity for a great dog but she lost a great opportunity to go to a great loving home. 0 communication in a roll that requires some!

You are trying to place a dog to a home without disclosing a bite incident, no matter the cause or injury this SHOULD be disclosed just in case so your failure to do so and then you cussing out the mother who stepped forward is disgusting, we have all seen the SS so you cant deny seeing that injury, you cant deny saying "oh it was just a nip" and you cant deny your unprofessional responses.. you should be ashamed of yourself.

I wish I could give this “rescue” 0 stars. This “rescue” has dangerous and unethical practices. After a young child was bitten requiring 13 stitches in the neck, the rescue has publicly told potential adopters the dog is great with children. They are not disclosing bite history, endangering the welfare of children.
Furthermore, their interactions with the mother of the child that was bitten are appalling. Claiming the child was only “nipped” and downplaying the wound that was inches away from an artery, and very well could have been a worse outcome. This child experienced pain, stitches, a lifetime scar, and PTSD from the incident. If anyone is researching this rescue, please be aware of their unethical practices and protect your children and families.

This places isn’t disclosing all information on a dog they are trying to get adopted. My daughter was attacked and they are telling me she was just nipped. They are not giving full and valuable information to the public about this dog. It’s extremely dangerous of them to with hood this information. I do not want another child to get hurt.

After finally making the decision that it was time for me to adopt a dog, I was very disappointed by my first experience trying to adopt. There was one dog that I was trying very hard to meet and after asking the owner or manager about him I was told that I am the only one that had showed interest. Therefore, after trying to get him down to Charleston from Columbia (only took 3 weeks...) he finally is brought. After failing the first day for him to come to my house and meet the other dogs I live with due it being Friday and I have a job. I cancelled all plans for Saturday so that I can meet him, But every time I reached out, it was an inconvenient time. I reached out multiple times Saturday with no response. Then knowing that they control the instagram page, they post a photo with the dog on a walk, with adopt me harness and "available for adoption" effect, to my knowledge it should have at least said "adoption pending" like every other legit rescue. Saturday and Sunday passed and did not hear anything back from them, literally ghosted. I understand that it's their decision on whether or not it is a right fit for the dog or not, but to not give any reason or just suddenly stop responding was very unprofessional.

I definitely wanted Woodie to get adopted way more than they did. I was the only one making an effort, cancelling plans, reaching out, and trying to just meet him. If they were against the fact that their were four dogs already in the house (though 2 would be leaving with the next month or so) then tell me. If they thought that it was straight up not a good fit, then tell me. All in all, I wish Woodie all the best and that he finds his forever home! But, not a fan of Southern Tails just a fan of the dogs they rescue.

I have had the pleasure to work with this rescue for 2 years and they do magnificent work. Lisa Guido founded the rescue in 2017 on Johns Island, SC. They are a no kill, foster based dog rescue. All of the rescue dogs go into foster homes until they are ready to be adopted. All dogs are spayed/neutered and have all their shots before being adopted. The dogs are pulled from high kill shelters or are found on the streets and are then given new lives with their new forever loving home.

A wonderful group that goes above and beyond to rehabilitate and rehome the dogs in their care. The dogs are so sweet and many, due to the loving care provided to them while in the rescue, have overcome great odds and have gone on to find loving forever homes.
