I’ve had the great pleasure of working with Southern California Keeshond Rescue for over 7 years. I had never heard of the Keeshond breed before, but when searching Petfinder for our next rescue dog, we saw a listing for an adorable Keeshond male. It didn’t work out for us with that dog, but it introduced us to SCKR and we were able to adopt two sweet and sassy female keeshond who filled our home with love and joy. Since then, we’ve adopted four keeshonden through SCKR and are currently fostering another. I’m so grateful to have been introduced to this wonderful breed and to work with such a caring rescue group like SCKR.

We adopted two senior keeshond girls from SCKR back in 2017. Katie and Madi (littermates) were two soft fluffy bundles of love. Their favorite thing to do was just be with me and cuddle as much as possible, and that quickly became my favorite thing too. Every evening as soon as I sat down on the couch after work, Katie would hop up on the couch and flop in my lap to give me kisses - it was the best part of my day.

When Katie passed away (cancer) a couple of months ago, Madi was without her sister for the very first time in her life. In the weeks following we noticed some behavior changes in our girl - she was listless and just didn't seem to be her bubbly, happy self. SCKR reached out to us and asked if we would consider fostering an available dog - a young (3 yrs) male keeshond. We weren't really looking for another dog, but we thought a temporary foster placement wouldn't be a big deal. Thor (formerly Jake) lasted only 2 weeks as a foster before we decided to adopt and have him join our pack permanently. He has brought us so much joy with his fun antics, and he has helped put the spring back in Madi's steps. She seems happy again, and I've enjoyed watching her teach Thor the ins and outs of our home, our yard, and our neighborhood like any big sister would.

SCKR takes great care when they place their dogs. The adoption application is extensive to learn about the adopter's experience with dogs and to make sure they can provide a loving home. A home check is conducted to make sure the dog's environment is safe and secure. Even after placement SCKR stays in touch to make sure everything is going well. They explained their expectations when we signed up for fostering, and I always felt supported and knew I could reach out to them if I needed help or advice about anything. I would not hesitate to recommend SCKR to other potential adopters.

I had the pleasure of fostering and then adopting Thora from the Southern California Keeshond Rescue (SCKR) in May 2020. SCKR's dedication and compassion were evident from the start. They took Thora in and provided her with much-needed surgeries for cherry eye and bladder stone removal. In our care, she flourished into a happy and healthy dog.

The adoption process was seamless, and the volunteers were knowledgeable and passionate. Their careful matchmaking ensures that both dogs and adopters have positive experiences. SCKR's excellent communication and ongoing support made the entire journey reassuring and positive.

I can't thank SCKR enough for saving this beautiful pup who was so deserving of a second chance. I highly recommend SCKR to anyone looking to adopt a Keeshond or support a reputable rescue organization.

So I have been a Southern California Keeshond Rescue fan for some time. I have fostered several Keeshonds over the years, and ALWAYS, when a dog arrives needing vet care and love, SCKR spares no expense to get veterinary care to that animal.

The love that continues for every rescued Keeshond lasts with the forever home.

I have been working with Southern California Keeshond Rescue for several years. I have fostered numerous Keeshonds, and have helped several to overcome their past lives with negligent owners.

The most impressive thing about SCKR is that how the protection, well-being, health and love of the animal is the topmost importance to the organization. A rigorous process of placing a dog to a possible foster home or permanent home is followed. The future happiness of each Keeshond is most important to the organization and its volunteers.

Upon finding a Keeshond that needs a permanent home, a complete regimen of medical tests are taken, allowing the best chances for a long happy life in a forever home. SCKR truly has the health and happiness in mind when a Keeshond is found. Being a part of this organization assures me that when I donate time or finances, the most important issue to the organization is saving and healing every Keeshond they rescue. I am grateful to be a part of this animal rescue organization, and know that we are making a difference in the lives of the Keeshonds that come into our care... one Keeshond at a time...

My first experience with Southern California Keeshond Rescue (SCKR) was in 2011. I had just lost my 8-year old Keeshond, Romeo, to Xylitol poisoning and was heartbroken. I applied to adopt a rescued Keeshond and was crying so much during my telephone interview with Vicky I'm surprised she could understand me. Next, Suzanne conducted a home interview and inspection. I thought I wasn't yet ready for a new dog, but Suzanne called shortly thereafter and asked if we would consider a 5-year old male named Teddy who was in foster care. We fell in love with him immediately and adored him for the next 7-1/2 years. We were so impressed with this organization, we asked to be volunteers. Over the years, we fostered several Keeshonds, including two puppies (we had forgotten how much work puppies are!). And twice, we were foster failures, loving those dogs many years until the day they they went to the Rainbow Bridge. SCKR is an outstanding organization and we are proud to be a part of a group who genuinely cares and makes sure they not only get the care they need but also goes above and beyond to assess their personalities and medical status and assures that they go to good homes. SCKR deserves more than 5 stars!

Fantastic Rescue! I have worked with SCKR for over 10 years. They are amazing. I found out about SCKR from my BFF and ex-neighbor Suzanne H. when I lived in Manhattan Beach, CA. She had rescued a Keeshond from them and then started working with them. I moved to Silver Spring, MD and a Keeshond came into the shelter and I asked if I could rescue him...They said yes and we made it happen and because they only will adopt in the Southern California area as they want to make sure all the dogs are taken care of and can be returned at "ANY" time we had Jazzy transported back to CA. I then started volunteering with them as I could do Application checks and vet and reference checks over the phone from MD. Then a person goes to the home and checks it out and there are many specifics to adopt from us. People don't get to choose the dog, we make sure it's a perfect fit to the best of our ability. Susan, the director, has been involved with rescue for years and she knows her stuff. Amazing group of women and amazing fur babies. I'm so grateful that I have been involved with them and will continue as long as I am able.

Southern California Keeshond Rescue, Inc. is a group near and dear to my heart because of the outstanding work they do to help Keeshonden in need. You would be hard pressed to find a more compassionate, responsive, and dedicated team of individuals who are so laser focused on their mission. I’m proud to say I’ve been a volunteer with SCKR since 2006, and my experience with the group compels me to nominate them as an exceptional nonprofit. SCKR is worthy of the recognition as they excel at all levels of rescue: exceptionally quick response to requests for help, empathetic interactions with individuals engaging the rescue group, and most importantly, a bottomless supply of loving care for animals coming into the SCKR circle.

Hello! There are many great nonprofit organizations out there supporting, humans, animals and the planet. I have been a volunteer with Southern California Keeshond Rescue for over twenty years and this organization is one of the best for rescuing, supporting and promoting the well-being and safety of Keeshonden in need of a permanent, loving home. Money donated to this outstanding organization goes to help Keeshonden in need by providing boarding, veterinary care, training and more. All Keeshonden that come into Southern California Keeshond Rescue get the best veterinary care possible. In additional to veterinary care and training (which is sometimes needed) SCKR provides loving, caring foster homes for these Keenshonden while they are evaluated to find the perfect forever home. It has been my honor to participate in such a wonderful organization to help meet the needs of Keeshonden in need.

Southern California Keeshond Rescue provides kind, loving rescue, veterinary care, foster homes and transport for Keeshonden in need. This organization has been a part of many, many, many "happy-ever-afters" for both Keeshonden and their families. Adoptive families are screened to find the best match for their family and available Keeshonden. Volunteers and foster families spend a great deal of time getting to know these wonderful pups to ensure a "furever" home. Many of our adoptive families have adopted more than one Kees from Southern Keeshond Rescue because of their positive experience with our rescue group. I have both adopted from Southern California Keeshond Rescue (our beautiful Emma) and volunteered with this wonderful organization. Southern California Keeshond Rescue is thoroughly committed to the welfare of Keeshonden who are in need of a loving home.

I have had Keeshond dogs since 1983 when I adopted my first one from Southern California Keeshond Rescue. I adopted my second Kees in 1994 at which time I met Susan McCoy and became familiar with her organization and everything they do for their rescued Keeshonden.
I began volunteering for SCKR after I adopted my third Kees, a puppy, and knew in my heart that this nonprofit was one consistent with what was important to me when rescuing a dog. A potential adopter must fill out a seven page adoption application, have a telephone interview, have 3 personal references checked, a veterinary reference checked and then these are reviewed by the Board of Directors and then, if approved, a home visit is conducted by one of their volunteers. Once approved after the home visit, the applicant is placed on the waiting list.
When a Kees is brought into SCKR, they go directly to their veterinarian for an exam, a senior screen, a heart worm test, a fecal and vaccines. Any medical needs including teeth cleaning, spay or neuter, or other necessary care is taken care of prior to placement. Once medical care is taken care of, the dog is placed in one of their approved foster homes to assess his/her personality and what kind of placement will be best for the dog. Their goal is not to simply place the rescued Kees in a home but to place them in the right home based on their individual needs in order to ensure the best forever home for every rescued Keeshond. I am
proud to recommend SCKR as one of the greatest nonprofits.

SCKR, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) breed specific dog rescue organization. I have had Keeshond rescue dogs since the 1982. I adopted my second Keeshond from SCKR in 1994 and have been involved as a volunteer since 2003. I am proud to volunteer for SCKR, to adopt my Keeshonden through them and to represent them doing review of applications, reference checks, telephone interviews, home visits and fostering the rescue dogs. Representing a rescue organization that prides itself not just in placing dogs in a new home but placing the Keeshonden in the right home is a joy. Every family is different as is every dog and SCKR wants to be confident that this new home will be their forever home. By the time they reach SCKR, they have experienced losing a home, possibly being on the streets or in a shelter, etc., and need no additional trauma in their lives. All the rescues are fostered prior to placement, there are no kennels. Volunteers learn about the dogs’ personalities, preferences, and whether or not they are good with other dogs or cats, All the Keeshonden have been cleared medically prion to placement having had a thorough exam, blood panel, urinalysis, fecal, heart worm tests, spay or neuter if necessary as well as teeth cleaning if needed. SCKR remains committed to the rescues for the entirety of their lives. If for any reason the family is unable to care for the dog, the SCKR contract requires that the dog be returned to SCKR.
In my opinion, there is no better dog rescue organization than SoCA Keeshond Rescue.

We have been involved with Southern California Keeshond Rescue for several years now, both as an adoptive family and as volunteers.

SCKR loves Keeshonden and is dedicated to make sure all the dogs in our favorite breed survive and thrive. They scour listings at shelters for Keeshond dogs, follow up on tips about strays and sometimes they are the organization that owners, that can no longer care for their beloved dogs, call to make sure that their pets will find new forever homes.

Susan and Suzanne, and all the volunteers we have met over the years are absolutely dedicated to this important work. We are proud to be "customers" as well as volunteers.

Here is our latest family member adopted from SCKR, Murphy. The Murf-meister has been with us about 9 months now, and is a great addition to our family. He and Bentley (also from SCKR) are buddies and are both happy to have a canine companion.

We adopted a Keeshond 16 years ago who was the most amazing dog we have ever had. We knew he would not be with us long and wanted to bring another rescued Keeshond into our home to meet him before we lost him. Susan and the team at Southern California Keeshond Rescue were wonderful to work with. They made me aware of a dog in need, they picked him up, ensured he was healthy and happy with an amazing foster family and then shared him with my family after ensuring our home and lifestyle would be supportive for his new life. Our new boy is amazing and he got to spend 6 months with our older dog before we lost him. We can't wait to see our new Keeshond family and all their canine family members at the annual picnic in August!

The Southern California Keeshond rescue organization is the best dog rescue I’ve worked with. We have a 16 year old Keeshond and were hoping to bring another one into the home. I reached out to them and they stayed in touch with me on potential Keeshond Rescue’s that were available not only through their organization but through other organizations as well. Keeshond‘s are not a common dog in California, so they can be difficult to find and in frequently available. They reached out to me with a dog available at a shelter several hours away. They picked him up, got him medical care and placed with the foster family while they performed a thorough background investigation with me. I met multiple workers for the organization through interviews through home visits and evaluation’s. All the volunteers were wonderful to interact with and were clearly focused on the best care for the dog! They are so thorough, making sure that it will be a successful placement for their precious dogs and providing us, the new owners with all of the support that we need. The foster family and I are still in touch regularly. They were so loving with him, and so generous with us, providing all of his favorites while he was with them. Kopi is thriving with us and our two other dogs, and now a beloved member of our house. We never would have found him without their help, and they made the process smooth and successful!

SCKR is an amazing group of people dedicated to saving the lives of rescued Keeshonden. My wife and I have had the pleasure of adopting our last 3 Keeshonds from this group and our experience working with them has been nothing short of completely satisfied and positive. The time and care given to the rescued dogs is extensive, not to forget the incredible cost of doing so. As dog lovers we are more than pleased to support SCKR in any way we can, including through monetary donations when they are needed, which is pretty much always.

SCKR for years has been the epitome of what a rescue organization should be. They have rescued so many dogs, treated and found “furever” homes for so many it is impossible to count. Using donations to care and provide a stable environment until a suitable home can be found is not an easy task but SCKR does it over and over. I can’t say enough for this outstanding rescue group.

Southern California Keeshond Rescue and Susan McCoy did a very good job of screening our family and home for placement of our Keeshond, Chazz.
They helped locate a good match, facilitated communication between us and the foster family and supplied helpful support during the 12* years we we enjoyed Chazz.
They also help organize activities in which other owners can help share information and learn more about proper care and full enjoyment of the breed.
Having had contact with other breeders and rescues in the past and since, I can highly recommend this organization.

SCKR is an amazing nonprofit organization. I adopted my Keeshond, Kyle (2 years old) from SCKR over 25 years ago after going through the loss of our previous Keeshond, Vinnie.. SCKR went to great lengths to make sure that Kyle was going to a nice family, would be safe and well cared for. Kyle was with our family until he was almost 15 years old. I miss him terribly. SCKR has made sure to keep the relationship going by continuing to invite me to picnics and other events. It warms my heart, because it reminds me of Kyle, and what a big part of our family he was. I felt that the adoption process was handled very professionally and with ease. From time to time I still visit the SCKR website to see what's going on. I feel that the organization is well managed, and I would highly recommend SCKR as well as this amazing breed.

We found our family addition, Kyle, on the Southern California Keeshond Rescue, Forever Families website. We, previously were lucky enough to have had our first Keeshond, Vinnie, in our lives for 12 years, and in missing that part of our family, we were ready to adopt our next Keeshond. On the SCKR Website, we saw many pictures and stories of adoptable dogs, and Kyle caught our eye. After contacting the SCKR, within a day or two, we were invited to meet Kyle, we fell in love with him, we filled out the necessary papers, a representative came to our house, and Kyle was introduced into our family. Kyle's story was that his previous owner had to move and could not take him with her. He was almost 2 years old when we adopted him. His original name was Rocky, but SCKR named him Kyle, because their philosophy was that "forever friends" should have more "human-like" names. We agree and that was good with us! Kyle instantly adapted to our home and our family. He was really smart, well trained, and was open to new training. First on the list was "don't eat the bird!". We had a Cockatiel that had free range of the house, and was not fearful of Keeshonds, because our previous Keeshond, Vinnie, was a friend. In one day, Kyle learned not to eat the bird. The attached picture is our Cockatiel, Samba, sitting on top of Kyle. Kyle was always featured every year in our holiday family photo. The only objection from my daughters was that we always had to pick the photo where Kyle looked the best. I've attached one of my favorites. Kyle was a part of our family until he was almost 15 years old. SCKR featured him in one of their newsletters and he was also on one of their calendars. The organization has stayed in touch with me throughout the years. I want to thank the family who initially surrendered Kyle (Rocky) to SCKR and want to let them know that he was deeply loved and well cared for. And, an additional shout out to SCKR for making it possible for us to adopt Kyle and love him for many years.

Without the SCKR i would never have met the happiest dog ever. Last month little Braden's life came to an end. But not before I got to spend six years learning to be happy. His age was hard to judge as when he came to the rescue, he had been living on the streets for a long period of time. Only four teeth were salvageable and a few other medical issues were addressed before I got a call. My two littermates who also came from the Rescue had just passed away two weeks apart, after a long spoiled life here. Braden from day one was filled with joy, food, treats, walks, snuggles in the big bed, and pets from those who encountered his little furry butt were all greeted with enthusiasm. One day when the sprinkler system at our new house had to be replaced, he went into the yard, and promptly fell into one of the trenches for the pipes. His little head popped up, then all you could see was his head then bottom bouncing up and down as he ran through the maze he had discovered. Needing to let the gardener work, we went back into the house. Later that evening, when we went back out, the trenches covered, he spent half an hour looking for his new Braden sized maze.
Even after going blind, due to age, he knew his way around the house and yard. He could feel the water pipes as the sprinklers turned on, and would run out to play in the water, then come in find me and lay his wet self on my feet. Happy to the end, he had a good day, then laid down, had what looked like a stroke and a couple of hours later was at peace.
Without the SCKR I'd never have met several other wonderful companions, but of all the dogs I've ever met, a little stray from the streets turned out to be the happiest dog I've ever met.

Healing broken hearts. More than 20 years ago my heart was broken when a little pound puppy who the vet could not identify because he was so matted and fearful of everyone and everything passed away after blossoming into a true and faithful friend of 12 years. After being shaved, out grew a Keeshond. A new breed to me at the time. Researching his breed I found the Sothern California Keeshond Rescue, where I found more loveable Keesies, and those devoted to providing a good life to full blooded and mixed breed dogs. Since then, four more have come to prove that the broken heart I had when my first boy passed, still had room for more fuzzy love, and those subsequent Keesies could aid in the healing of my loss, as well as bring joy to those we encounter each day. The work of the SCKR expands beyond the individual dogs they rescue to the lives of the people who encounter these little healers of hearts.

I have been involved in animal welfare since I lost my sweet Keeshond girl Penny in 2003. Her passing made me want to serve dogs in need, which influenced me to volunteer at my local humane society. Later, I turned my efforts to supporting Keeshonden, a fire lit by my precious six year old Keesie rescue named Lizzie. As part of Lizzie’s adoption, I was requested to make a donation to Southern California Keeshond Rescue, Inc. (SCKR), a group I hadn’t heard about but would soon become devoted to as one of its biggest “fans” and as one of its volunteers.

SCKR is an organization that has stayed true to its mission of serving Keeshonden in need. It is a small group of like minded individuals who work together to ensure dogs receive the love and care they need to live happy, fulfilling lives. No stone goes unturned when it comes to helping our rescues and meeting (exceeding!) their needs. Layla, my foster girl, is an example of how the love and dedication of SCKR can change the world — one Keesie at a time.

The motto of the Southern California Keeshond Rescue (SCKR) is: "Saving just one Keeshond won't change the world...but, surely, the world will change for that one Keeshond." Yes, and the world will also change for those of us who want so much to be chosen as the " Forever Home" for one of their pups.

After submitting a really thorough application, including letters of reference, there is a home visit. Suzanne Humphrey came out and walked through our property, making certain it was safe and secure. Then we went through the house. "Will you give him fresh water 3 times a day?" "Yes, bottled." "Where will he sleep?" "Any place he wants. He'll have the run of the house."

Then, finally, the day arrived and our beloved Dakota came here to his Forever Home. He became a therapy dog at Children's Hospital where the kids and staff just adored him.

I kept in touch with Suzanne, sending her photos and updates. When our Dakota was diagnosed with cancer, I kept her posted on his treatments. And when that horrible day arrived, she and I cried together.

This is now Nathan's Forever Home. And I regale Suzanne with his comings and goings and, of course, pictures.

The SCKR does more than just place their pups. They are there to support you, to share the joys and the grief. I consider them to be my dearest of friends.

I had put in an application to foster a Kesshond through the Southern California Keeshond Rescue. They vetted my application and followed up with a home visit and reference checks. A few months later they contacted me about an 8 year old Keeshond mix that they rescued from a shelter named Thora. They gave her the extensive medical treatment that she needed (Bladder stone surgery and cherry eye surgery) and put her in my care. They were in frequent contact with me making sure she was doing okay and getting her post opp check ups. Their care and love that they put into every single rescue is outstanding! We decided to adopt Thora a few weeks later. We can't thank SCKR enough for rescuing our baby and getting her the surgery that she needed!

put us in touch with a couple out of Phoenix Arizona (Karen and Joe) who was
Fostering 2 Keeshond puppies (Lewis and Clark) When my wife called they were very gracious and very workable with us. We drove there from San Diego, stayed there for 2-3 hours and picked Clark, (Teddy) we even got a book from them with photos of the dogs and us. I can only say how nice they were. We would use Southern California Keeshond Rescue, again if needed.

We have been clients of SCKR for over 25 years and never has there been an issue with the way the Keeshonds are treated as well as the kind words and help for their clients. When ever we have a question about our rescue's, SCKR is always able to provide the answer in lighting speed. Susan McCoy considers each and every dog as a family member as do the other volunteers. In fact, her slogan is "always for the animals." She just doesn't "talk the talk" she "walks the walk!" SCKR is top cabin in our opinion.

We've worked with Southern California Keeshound Rescue group over the last 14 plus years ago
and have never found another rescue to equal the dedication, and reliance they expose.
When we found them on line after the passing of our Sweet Pea two years earlier, we found Milo on line with Southern California Keeshound Rescue. We were so impressed with Susan’s dedication to the breed, attention to detail and security for Milo, and a fit for us as a unit. We're impressed by the meticulous care taken of each and every Keeshound, based upon their individual needs and personality.
We have lived with the wonderful bread for 30 years and they fit our family, they baby sit the grandkids when they are small, protect they when they are out on walks, and make us welcome when we return home.

The Southern California Keeshound Rescue’s reputation preceded them, and we were not disappointed. The adoption process is thorough and we appreciate knowing that each of our fosters is adopted into a loving home that's just the right fit for its needs.

SCKR is one of the very best rescues in ALL of California.
We (husband and I) have gotten two wonderful Keesie babies from this rescue.
SCKR makes certain their rescues go to loving families that know how to care for them.
This rescue fastidiously goes over everything, looking at the homes, the safety and security of the yards and the personalities of the people wanting to adopt their rescues before any adoptions take place.
We adopted the most wonderful, beautiful Keeshonds from Susan at SCKR, and those beautiful souls are, Angel and Kahuna.
We've had these little furry loves in our lives for so very many, many years.
Tragically, we recently lost our oldest Keesie, Kahuna who was 17 years YOUNG when he passed.
He behaved and acted just like a puppy up until two weeks prior to his passing. (Kahuna died from natural causes.)
This little man was my Velcro boy, just as Kahunas' sister, Angel was Roberts' (husband) Velcro girl.
Angel has managed to bring Robert the most love of any fur baby he's ever had his entire life. She was his constant buddy, his best furry friend of all time.
Keeshonds are the most loving breed...They manage to slip right into your heart and soul and here they stay, solidly and comfortably lodged for an eternity and even that isn't nearly long enough.
Kahuna took the biggest chunk of my heart with him when he passed in March of this year, (2021.) Tears are making it difficult to type, as since Kahunas' passing, these tears are relentless.
I can honestly say that this rescue gave me the best gift I've ever had in my entire life...My Kahuna boy, he was beyond precious. He was priceless and magically brought love with him anywhere he went and to everyone he met.
Angel, the three legged wonder also more than lived up to her namesake a gazillion times over.
Angel drew you into her world, always the sweetheart, always wanting to make anyone she met her friend.
Angel passed six years before Kahuna (also from natural causes) and is so very missed and loved and remembered every single day, just as her brother Kahuna is.
Susan has been more than helpful with anything and everything Keeshond related.
For any and all questions concerning this breed, she is always there and goes out of her way to help in any way that she can.
Thankfully, Susan McCoy came into our lives bringing the joy of two very special little furry souls...Kahuna and Angel.
We could never thank her enough, not in a billion lifetimes...
Thank you Susan and much love,
Cherie Chantal

My family adopted two Keeshonds from SCKR and they were the best pets you could
ask for. My dog Rex was affectionate and willing to do what ever you desired. He was a valued member of the family.

The rescue is always trying to rehabilitate older Keeshonds than have been abandoned by their original owners.

I found my Keeshond at SCKR 14 years ago. He was a stray that was badly injured when he was rescued from the animal shelter. The rescue did a home study before he was adoptable.
Rex was his name, and he was an amazing dog who would have been put down if he had not been rescued.

If a dog is not adoptable, the rescue keeps them and uses foster homes to keep them safe.

In my opinion, they provide a valuable service for animals that are truly in need of love and
affection.

I am a veterinarian that works with a volunteer and foster for this group. My experiences with this organization and this foster in particular have been nothing but amazing. The level of heart, and education, and medical attention that goes into each one of these dogs that is taken in is truly inspiring.
I got to work with some of the foster dogs and they had every medical need met immediately. They had every behavioral and mental need met immediately.
So many rescue groups are borderline hoarder situations where animals are taken from one bad situation to the next. SCKR is anything but, and I highly recommend anyone who wants to be a part of the dog rescue world, or who wants to adopt one of these amazing dogs to reach out.

Submitted by M. C. Anderson: Our first Keeshond, Grady, was a SCKR rescue who was abandoned at a shelter due to medical issues. SCKR arranged for Grady to get the best medical care, and despite his eating and mobility issues, he lived a happy life with our family for 4 years. After he crossed the rainbow bridge, SCKR reached out to see if we would like to foster a Keeshond puppy that was posted on Craig's list. She is now a permanent member of our family and is following in Grady's paw steps. SCKR rescued and helped these two precious dogs, and our family is so grateful that they are in our lives.

I have helped foster or adopted dogs from SCKR 6 times. These were good-tempered and extraordinary dogs who had been abandoned by owners or abandoned due to the death of the owner. SCKR allowed us to give a home to older dogs to live out their years in a caring and loving environment. We truly appreciate the work SCKR does, so we often donate items from our collection of rare and special Keeshond art, clothing, collectibles and stamps for their wonderful charity auctions. SCKR provides care and medical attention to many rescues, and we feel blessed to be a part of their community!

We have worked with SCKR for 20 years, retrieving, fostering, and railroading Keeshonden. We've fostered three older dogs and every one was precious. We retrieved one pup from terrible circumstances and fell in love with him, but he was promised to another foster parent. 6 months later the foster parent had to give that dog back to rescue, and we ended up with Logan, my heart dog and the BEST dog to ever join our family. SCKR not only looks out for the rescues but also looks out for it's family of helpers. We highly recommend SCKR as an organization for donations and volunteering!

After losing our beloved Keeshond, April Ann, to cancer, we contacted SCKR to see if there were any available Kees that we could welcome into our family. We met Susan McCoy and several wonderful volunteers and many beautiful Keeshonds that were ready to be adopted. We were open to male or female Kees- it did not matter. We let the dogs choose us. You see, we had a large mixed-breed dog (Harley)who was a gentle giant and he too, was in need of a companion. All of our hearts were broken with the loss of April Ann and we needed to fill the gap. We spent several hours talking to the volunteers and loving all the Kees and all were well-groomed. I must say that the volunteers do a magnificent job at keeping their adoptees ready for new homes. I loved all the dogs but did not get a good response from them. They were happy with their foster families or did not like the idea of a big dog. As I was talking to one of the volunteers, she directed me to 2 Keeshond that I had not yet seen. Two females, so beautiful I cried. After sitting on the ground and talking to them, they crawled into my lap and let me love them. I was so very happy. The tears of joy just kept coming for I had found not 1 but 2 gorgeous dogs to love. Just to be sure this was a good choice, we put a stake in the ground and put the big dog's (Harley) leash on it beside the 2 Keeshonds. We left them along for about 45 minutes, always checking at a glance but waiting to see how they would react to each other. Upon our return, the 2 Keeshonds were snuggled up inside the belly part of Harley and all 3 were asleep. We adopted both Annie and Grandma a9a name we gave her) and headed home to Las Vegas. We keep in contact with SCKR and send photos and updates about our rescues and they are so very loving and careful about who adopts their dogs. This is comforting to us as parents. Since adopting Annie and Grandma, we also were lucky enough to adopt another from SCKR. Sunny is our newest addition to the family. All of these dogs are the most loving dogs who have enriched our lives.
SCKR cares about the health and well being of all the dogs the rescue and the families that adopt them. It just does not get any better than that.

SCKR cares so much about each one of their rescues. I have had 2 and both were just what i was told they would be which shows me that they spent personal time with each dog. They knew their medical status - good and not so good and their personalities and to the best of their knowledge, the dog's history.
To me this is most important. My first rescue was chosen for me and he was not my first choice but he turned out to be perfect. My two rescues are below. Love them always.

We have adopted 3 dogs from SCKR - they REALLY care about the dogs, getting the dogs needed medical care, training, socialization and anything else the dogs need. They thoroughly check out potential adopters, calling personal and Veterinary references and doing home visits. Their network of volunteers is quick to respond to a Keeshond in need. I highly recommend this well run and well organized charity.

Every rescue receives proper medical care and a place to stay until a forever home can be found. I have been honored to help transport many Keeshonds in need. Seeing rescue Keeshonds blossom in their new forever homes is truly rewarding. This is a great organization that cares for rescues!

SCKR has been so supportive of my desire to continue to own this amazing breed. I have had the pleasure of rescuing 4 Kees and they've all been loving and wonderful. SCKR takes great care in making sure that the rescues are healthy and they are well tuned to each dog's personality, I've never been disappointed.
3 of my wonderful rescues are passed on but I still have my 3.5 year Finni who is a real delight and can really "read" a room. I take him with me to long office meetings and to the tennis courts. He is perfect each time. I'm very grateful to this group. He's here with our adopted Himalayan Pepper. They're great friends.

Nine years ago we lost our second Keeshond and I immediately went to SCKR's website to see what dogs were available . I found one that seemed perfect and started the adoption process. SCKR really vetted us. The process was very complete but painless, and in a few weeks we had the most wonderful dog we have ever had, our dear Max. Upon delivery of Max the handler expressed serious concern about our unfenced swimming pool. Of course, as soon as she left, Max was happily swimming laps and continues do swim at will-smart dog. Our other Keeshound won't go near the water. Happily we still have Max, but when we lose him I would go to SCKR for my next Keeshond. They do amazing work to rescue and care for Keeshond's that need help. I cannot say enough good about this organization, they are wonderful.

I've been in Kees since 1966 when I bought the first one I ever saw. Bred, showed & promoted them ever since. When I relocated to Calif. I gave up breeding & showing and had two more Kees and finally adopted a wonderful young adult male who we just lost and am eager to find successor. I've owned over 100 Kees and am a big booster of the breed, of adoption and of the SouCalif. adoption club. Susan is an amazing advocate for all animals - especially Keeshonden.

Eleven years ago, we were searching for "the perfect dog" specifically, a Keeshond. None to be found in Las Vegas so we reached out to the specialty rescue groups. Lucky for us, we located a group called Southern Cal Keeshond Rescue. We had a large mixed breed dog and it was important for us to have "Harley" meet and approve of his new companion. We traveled to California for the annual Keeshond picnic and after meeting many beautiful Kees, we met two Keeshond's that had to be adopted together. Not sure if they would be ok with a big dog, we left Harley with the 2 Kees for an hour. When we returned, we found the 2 female Kees snuggled with our big dog. After tears of joy came the adoption of 2 beautiful dogs.
"Grandma " as we named her was a bit older and Annie was younger. Grandma was alpha, but that was ok as Harley and Annie obeyed her rule. Southern CalKeeshond rescue took care of their immediate medical needs and continued to check up on them to assure that we would be good parents. I have to say Susan McCoy is an amazing caring person and knowledgeable about this breed. She is all about taking care of this breed and making sure they are taken care of and go into loving caring homes. She works tirelessly. We were fortunate enough to also adopt another Keeshond from SCKR just 2 years ago. Sunny, started off to be a "foster" dog but needless to say, he added so much joy to our life and to Arthur the Husky's life, we lovingly adopted him too. We would always go back to SCKR.

My husband and I have gotten three of our Keesies from Keeshond rescues and SCKR is an awesome place to find a new family member with waging tail, bright eyes, pink tongue, a sweet heart and love & kisses galore.
We would truly be seriously lost without our fur babies.
These folks are kind and work really hard to find wonderful furever homes for the Keeshonds.

The photo in the center isn't a Keesie, she's our little Pommie girl, (Mischa) who loves 'rough-housing with her brother and sister and playing night and day with them.
These fur kids are a trio of energy and boundless love.
We lost one of our Keesies (Angel,) to cancer a year ago and Lucy; the puppy on the far left came to keep our Kahuna, baby (photo on right) sane and help him to cope with the loss of his sister, along with helping to heal Mischa's broken heart. Not to mention also helping to heal our shattered hearts, (the humans,) no picture shown.
This rescue helps in so many ways to find just the right fur kid for your family.
SCKR goes way above and beyond.
Highly recommend this rescue...They are 'lifesavers.'
Kahuna, Mischa, Lucy, Angel (rest in peace sweet baby girl,) and we humans LOVE them and thank them for helping to make our lives whole again.

My Keeshond puppy was a wonderful
puppy but was not being welcomed nor included by my Schipperke family... Little did I know because they were “a pack” & older dogs, they would not accept a new puppy... After 7 months of trying everything, I contacted Suzanne Humphrey from Keeshond Rescue & we met & she welcomed him like her own, taking him to the groomer & the vet & welcomed him into her home until she could get to know my puppy & place him in his perfect, “forever” home with a much younger Kesshond so he had someone to play with & a family with two daughters that adored him!

Would recommend Kesshond Rescue to anyone who is looking to relocate their dog with a new “forever” family because they treat your dog like their own until they can find the perfect placement for him or her! My dog is now accepted & welcomed not only by their Kesshond but also by their family!

Would highly recommend Southern California Rescue to anyone!

If you are an animal lover, you know how many sweet dogs, cats and other companion animals are looking for a forever home. Years ago, we fell in love with Keeshond dogs--sweet natured, gentle, mid-sized and very affectionate, loving family members. over the last 40 we have adopted and loved 5 Keeshond girls, both young and old--2 from individual owners who could no longer care for their pets and 3 from Southern California Keeshond Rescue.

Susan McCoy and this organization are vigorously devoted to rescuing abandoned Keeshond dogs and seeing that they find a loving and caring forever home. All rescued pets are evaluated medically and treated, chipped and neutered so you know the condition of any dog you would adopt from the Society. They are equally selective about to whom they will release a pet--they want to make certain that the home is one suited to the animal and that the adoptive parents and the pet relate well to one another, and that parents know how to care for any special needs of their adoptee.

My husband and I cannot recommend SCKR highly enough---they are truly an organization with a heart, providing necessary medical care for their wards-- those with medical conditions, those needing surgery, or those who are simply old. SCKR and its staff are committed not just to finding "a home" for their wards, but the "right" home for each pupper.

I found SCKR in 1999 which was soon after I moved to California whereby I was wanting to have a dog added to my family. I wasn't quite sure about the breed and if I wanted a pup or older, but then I found out this breed is amazing and this rescue is the best.

I met my first little girl Kayla just prior to my birthday where she sat right next to me and looked into my eyes and we knew we were meant to be together. Since that day in Sept 1999, I was hooked and have been adopting / fostering / volunteering / rescue railroading with his group ever since. My list is vast to the fuzzballs that have graced my home with their love and affection, and I would not have had it any other way. Most have moved over the Rainbow Bridge, but will never leave my heart and soul. SCKR everyday go above and beyond for these animals to save them and find them the most amazing homes where they can live their lives fully and if it wasn't for them I would not have enjoyed the past years as much as I have.

I had to wait 42 years to find my first fluff ball Keeshond. Always living in apartments, working too much... not really understanding the bond between human and canine. I found my first Keesie (as we lovingly call them) two days before I moved into my first and only home. Some years passed... and I wanted to find a buddy for Ms. Chloee Melissa. and I searched the web for "Keeshonds" and discovered The Southern California Keeshond Rescue. After the rescue people came to my home to assess the possibility of fostering one of their Keesies... and passing the in-home check, I was able to locate my first Keesie son, Billee Baggins. Billee was five when he rescued me... and now is nine wonderful years old. After Billee rescued me, I started to become involved with the organization, and learned what it is like to personally sponsor a misplaced, abandoned or lost animal.

Working with this organization has allowed me to become an active participant in working with the Universe to make a difference by saving one Keeshond at a time. The love and support I have experienced working with SCKR has made me a better human, and a wonderful Keesie mom. I do not believe there is a more loving and supportive nonprofit that makes a difference in the lives of so many Keeshond angels. ... so much of a difference in the lives of humans and canine!
