My daughter, 27, is developmentally disabled. Soon after turning 20, I was able to help her move in to her own place with a roommate, also disabled--and although the rent was very expensive, she was able to live on her own and share expenses with her roommate, while working two part-time jobs. The economy tanked and she lost both jobs--and her independence was in jeopardy. (Her critical thinking and reasoning skills improved with independent living--where she is forced to make her own decisions and be responsible for her meals, bills, laundry--and she loves it!). With the assistance of the San Diego Regional Center and the SCHC, she was able to move into an affordable living complex that was manageable within her limited budget (largely SSI and SSDI), and continues to thrive in an independent living setting.
