Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Crime & Law, Employment Preparation & Procurement, Job Training, Prison Alternatives, Rehabilitation Services for Offenders

Mission: For over 31 years, the South Forty Corporation has enabled prisoners and ex-offenders to become productive, taxpaying citizens. Among the organization's founding board members was William Vanderbilt, a former governor of Rhode Island and William Bradley, a basketball player for the New York Knicks who later became a United States Senator. South Forty has led the way in initiating prison programs designed to provide a better future for offenders. And these programs have been successful in reducing the number of men and women who might otherwise have returned to prison.

Hello my name is Michelle Smith-Velez:

When I was attending John Jay College of Criminal Justice, I was sent to the Bayview Correctional Facility in NYC to do a college internship with South Forty Corp. There I met a wonderful woman named Loretta Brown who taught me a tremendous amount about this population and how to serve their needs. I will never forget my experiences will all types of women who were hopeful for a better future. This experience changed me forever.
