I first heard about the South Florida SPCA when my neighbor adopted a rescue horse from them. Curious, I decided to visit and see what they were all about. I remember the first time I visited the South Florida SPCA. It was supposed to be just a quick stop, but I ended up spending hours there, completely captivated. The welcoming staff walked me throughout the barn where I was able to see the rescue horses and retired race horses they bring in. By the time I left, I knew this wasn’t just a place that helped animals—it was a place that gave them a second chance at life. That experience stayed with me, and I’ve supported them ever since.

Attending the South Florida SPCA's annual open house was an unforgettable experience for the whole family! The event was packed with fun activities for kids, including crafts and educational games that taught them about animal care and rescue. One of the highlights was the “Painting with a Horse” experience, where we got to see a rescue horse create a masterpiece—it was such a unique and delightful moment! The kids also loved giving treats to the rescued animals and learning their stories. The entire day was a wonderful blend of fun and education, and it was amazing to see how the South Florida SPCA involves the community in their mission to help animals. We can’t wait to attend next year!

I volunteer often with South Florida SPCA. You can tell that everyone there loves and cares for the animals. Each and every animal is cared for. Some animals arrive in bad shape but with each week that goes by in the hands of the organization, you can start noticing the difference. By the end of the month, you wouldn’t even believe that it’s the same animal.

I volunteer with South Florida SPCA and get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how these animals are truly cared for.
On my first day, staff members traveled at 3am to rescue an abandoned mule and bring him to sanctuary. In another moment, the staff and volunteers created a hoist system to help one of our horses stand, as she was so badly neglected that her muscular atrophy prevented her from standing or moving on her own.
These are just a few instances of the wonderful care and dedication that the South Florida SPCA provides for those in our care. Staff and volunteers dedicate daily time and attention to each animal to ensure they are safe, happy, and healthy.
I have nothing but positive things to say about this wonderful organization, their staff, and their volunteers.

My name is Susan Martell and I am a longtime volunteer with the South Florida SPCA who also serves as the Community Outreach/ Educational Coordinator for the organization. I cannot say enough about this amazing organization and what they do to help save the lives of animals in need. I have never seen a more loving, caring and giving group of staff, board members and volunteers who always put the needs of the animals before their own. The SFSPCA rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes these animals giving them a second chance at life. I have just adopted my second off-track thoroughbred rescue. The first was found starving to death and would not have survived much longer without the care she received. I gave her an amazing home for 9 years and lost her in 2022. She had just turned 24 going on 14. After this devastating loss I knew in time, another rescue would come in to the SFSPCA that also needed me. This mare was rescued before going to slaughter from the track. She was only 4! The SFSPCA took care of several health of her health needs and put her in training. I adopted her in November and it was just one more success story to add to the long list of lives saved and second chances given. As a volunteer who conducts orientation classes for new volunteers, I cannot say enough about the loving and caring volunteers who donate their time to build trust and show love to all of the rescued animals. This organization means the world to me. I will be eternally grateful to them for rescuing two very special horses in my life and countless other animals. The South Florida SPCA is just absolutely incredible! Pictures are my 2 rescues. The first is when she was first rescued. I lost her unexpectedly and the second is living her best life with me currently thanks to the rescue efforts of this organization.

I first came across the south Fl spca 8 years ago when I was looking for another horse. I told them what kind of horse I wanted and they were so honest and up front about their horses. My wish list of a 16+ hand gelding, was fulfilled by them! But turned out I fell in love with a little 15’1 hand thoroughbred mare. When they rescued her she was known as “la sheikh” she was a body score of a one. This horse is seriously my whole world. She’s my best friend and we’ve done so many amazing things together. Without the amazing work the spca does my mare likely would of died and I never would of had her in my life. I could not be more thankful for the south Fl spca. They do so much for these horses and it’s never about the money for them. Truly a one of a kind rescue run by a group of amazing caring people.

This institution is so important and does so much good. Ask the numerous animals….. yes not just horses, but cows, pigs, sheep, goats and many more!!
Unfortunately those places where large neglected animals can find a home are far and in between! Lots of space and a big budget is needed to house, heal, feed those creatures!! I personally have seen how horribly abused or starved horses returned to their beautiful self and got another chance in life by being adapted into a new and forever home!!!!…… and yes my little rescue dog Kiwi originated from there too!!!!

The story how everything began ( a woman’s mission to help horses after the huge hurricane 1992) is inspiring and the Organisation over the years grew into a highly respected nonprofit. I don’t want to imagine how much more pain and suffering there would be without this organization. Horses in diff stages of abuse are nursed back to health and than great effort is taken to find loving forever homes. Ever so often non horses are being rescued too and forever homes found.....like little Kiwi, who changed my life for the better. Never buy, always rescue.

I am extremely grateful to have found the south Florida SPCA. I recently suffered the loss of two of my horses to a tragic lightning storm in our area. One of them being a Florida cracker Horse whom I had bonded With and build a special relationship over the last seven or eight years. Florida cracker horses hold an extremely special place in my heart. With that being said I stumbled across an adoption post for Chase a two year old Florida cracker horse who was born at the SPCA. I knew immediately that I had to have him, they had lead me to that horse, Chase now known as tinder has been started under saddle and I cannot wait to see where our journey takes us. They selflessly put in countless hours to help these neglected and starved animals recover and bring them back to their maximum potential for quality of life. Whether it’s hourly medical attention, foal watch through the night, or coordinating a rescue with law enforcement, they always put the animal first. The volunteers work together with passion and boundless energy to achieve the ultimate news once rehabilitation is achieved - the news of adoption. My experience with the South Florida SPCA started as a vet tech for their equine veterinarian, in 2014. Over the years of working as a tech, I saw time and time again, the great care, love, and dedication that was put into rescuing these animals, and ensuring they never again knew cruelty or neglect. So many of the cases, that they rescued horses and livestock from, were absolutely horrific, things I had never imagined people could do to their animals. It stuck with me, for the next 6 years. I have recently began working with The South Florida SPCA, managing social media, and helping further promote the good work that they do, and help animals reach a wider audience, to find forever homes. This organization truly loves every animal that comes through the gate, and takes each of their individual needs into every decision made. The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected them, as it has everyone, but they have made every effort possible to ensure that these animals don't feel the sting, and they can continue to provide safe refuge for the neglected and abused animals of Miami Dade county. This community is a better place because of The South Florida SPCA. If you ever want to donate to an organization, the South Florida SPCA is the one!

Without her relentless perseverance to save theses beautiful and precious horses non would have survived. We saved over 200 + abandoned and starved farm animals and though vet fees and food for them was not in our budget we took them in with open arms and made do. At one we even took in a camel!!!! No is not in our vocabulary when it come to saving the animals. Some of our rescues have stayed imprinted in my heart forever. I never thought anyone could do such atrocities to these gentle giants. The South Florida SPCA Horse Rescue has saved thousands of horses since the early 90’s many of which would otherwise have had horrific endings. I have often seen the rescue go above and beyond when a rescued horse, who was on death’s door, has let them know that they aren’t ready to go and that they still have the will to live and turn their lives around. There have been so many times when others would have given up. But not the SFSPCA. They truly are special. Look up the story about Amazing Grace for a very inspirational “from rags to riches” rescue and rehabilitation. This poor pony did not even have the strength to stand on her own.

I have volunteered at the SFSPCA for many years. Many dedicated, giving people have worked tirelessly caring for these horses and other farm animals that had been dumped in the Everglades, or on the back agricultural dirt roads or were abandoned and left to fend for themselves, others confiscated from neglect and abusive environments. SF SPCA is these animals only safety net here in this area of South Florida. Besides horses and farm animals, camels and emus and such livestock have been rehabbed and found homes or sanctuary through SF SPCA. There is not enough good that can be said about SF SPCA, it rescues so many 24 / 7.

The volunteer program is a family, we help each other when work needs to get done and we would do anything to help the horses. Laurie, the board, and the staff work so hard to keep this place as amazing as it is and I know would do what ever it takes to keep all the animals happy and healthy. It is truly an amazing place and is a place that is needed in this world.

Why I give? The unbridled compassion, the willingness to give every animal the best care; a second, third, or fourth chance; the 24/7 willingness and readiness to be there and rescue, and the volunteers - community members who show up week after week and give. When a community is so willing to work to help an agency, you know it's the best.

At Critter Creek Farm Sanctuary, we have worked with the SFSPCA several times to rehome cows and donkeys they have rescued from horrible situations. Several of our residents wouldn't be alive without the direct intervention of these dedicated professionals. One of the most remarkable cases is that of Grover, a calf they found abandoned in an avocado grove. Grover was so sick and so emaciated he couldn't stand and had to be dragged out on a stretcher. Most organizations would have simply euthanized him, but the SFSPCA never gave up and diligently nursed him back to health. He is now a very happy, healthy boy who continues to grow and thrive. We are so grateful for the work they have done and will continue to do, and are glad to be their rescue partners.

The dedication put forth by this group is outstanding. Over the years I have seen them rescue horses that were certainly on deaths bed and bring them back physically and mentally. Laurie Waggoner, her staff and volunteers do incredible work rehabilitating the animals they rescue and giving them new, productive lives.

I am a volunteer at this wonderful facility in South Florida, and I can tell you that the amount of hard work and love they put in to keep these animals safe is amazing! They are truly a magnificent organization that properly cares for every animal that they receive! My personal favorite are the transformations of the horses; they are given another chance at a good life through this organization.

I have been blessed to have adopted a horse and a miniature horse from the So. Fla. SPCA. The South Florida SPCA horse rescue provides a vital function to our community. They advocate and provide safe harbor for horses and farm animals that have been dumped or victims of animal cruelty. They are professionals in providing rehabilitation and veterinary care for the animals so that they can ultimately be adopted to loving, responsible permanent homes. This is a wonderful organization.

I am a volunteer at SFSPCA and have been for more than a year. I love the way they help the animals recover from severe stress, traume and abuse and bring out in them their most beautiful quaities to ready them for adoption and going into their next best life.

I have seen the work that this institution does to help the horses and I believe they deserve all the support they can get. It’s terrible the way some of these animals have been treated by their original owners and it is uplifting to see how they flourish once they are under the protection of this organization and the good people who devote endless hours to make sure they live a healthy and happy life.

For years, I have followed the phenomenal work of the South Florida SPCA and today I am honored to serve on the Board of Directors. This organization is the last option for equines in Miami-Dade County, FL - for those poor animals who have been abused and mistreated, or are simply lost. Without this organization there would be no hope for them. The people who work there have hearts of gold and are so very compassionate and caring. I applaud this organization and honored to be a part of it!

I volunteered at the SPCA years ago and adopted horses as well.
Laurie is very committed and passionate about ending horse abuse. From picking abandoned animals to their recovery and finding them a good home. The SPCA takes on this challenge everyday, with great success.

I have known about SFSPCA for years and have volunteered there and have seen the good work that they do. It is the only rescue, as far as I know, that will rescue horses in Miami-Dade County. They filled a huge gap by rescuing horses. They have earned the great reputation that they have throughout the state.
