Causes: Biological & Life Sciences
Mission: Soma is an educational, public benefit corporation dedicated to the study and research of mycology to encourage public education of the unique and beneficial role fungi play in maintaining the health of our woodland system.
Programs: In the fiscal year we consulted with hospital emergency health care personnel to assist identification of wild mushrooms as possible cause of patient poisoning. In addition, we led 9 forays attended by about 300 - 350 members of the public. Our organization held the sonoma county mycological association wild mushroom camp jan 14-16th. We attended the science fair at healdsburg; recognizing two students for their effort. Soma members also attended "discovery day science program" at the sonoma county fairgrounds in october, and the mycological society of san francisco's "wild mushroom fair" in december. We also held soma camp volunteer appreciation day picnic in july. Finally, five graduate level scholarships ($1500 each) were presented to graduate level students in university mycology departments in california and oregon.
