Causes: Civil Rights, Minority Rights
Mission: The purposes for which the corporation is organized are exclusively charitable, educational, scientific, literary and for the prevention of cruelty to children within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Specific emphasis: to provide educational resources and information to immigrants in new mexico regarding rights, protections, and remedies; develop and implement strategies to protect immigrants' civil and human rights; and organize activities that increase public awareness about immigrant issues in new mexico and elsewhere.
Programs: Immigrant policy project: somos members participated in and coordinated campaigns that challenged anti-immigrant policies and promoted immigrant- friendly ones locally and statewide. Somos organized a statewide campaign with 50 churches, community groups, and service agencies to support legislation that would strengthen the state's driver's license law and support road safety.
united worker center (ucw): somos opened new mexico's first and only worker center, where workers can obtain information about protectios and remedies, file wage claims, and organize for improved wages and workplace conditions. The center provided informaiton, presentations, and referrals to approximately 2,576 people about employment protections and remedies. Staff and members helped workers file wage claims and national labor relations board complaints.
immigrant resource center: 1,130 immigrant famiilies and service providers obtained information regarding rights, remedies, and available resources.
civil rights project: somos provided civil rights education throughout new mexico via know-your-rights workshops, forums, and written materials. Somos conducted presentations regarding civil rights protections and remedies to 1482 individuals in eight counties. "viva el voto" is a citizenship and voter registration program reaching out through forums to 1,000 people in rural southeastern new mexico. The artesia refugee fund is a special fund designated by individual donors for families of refugees released from a temporary detention center at the federal law enforcement training center.
