Mission: Solid waste association of north america, inc. (swana)'s primary objectives are to develop increased professionalism in the field of solid waste management, to develop environmentally sound, economically competitive, and effective integrated solid waste management systems, including reduction, recycling, collection, transfer, processing, landfilling, and waste-to-energy conversion of solid wastes, and to foster a cooperative atmosphere among municipal solid waste management professionals through dissemination of information, continuing education and professional development, and research programs to best serve the public interest.
Programs: Technical programs, training and education - starting with wastecon and other conferences held within the us throughout the year, swana provided education and training opportunities through traditional conferences and e-trainings. Swana updated training courses through the training investment initiative. Swana continued to increase its knowledge resources for members by upgrading the e-library system. These programs have allowed swana to reach more of the solid waste industry during the year.
research and development - select public agencies, private companies, and swana chapters team together to identify and participate in swana-run research of a current topic or industry issue. These projects typically lead to the development of three to four reports per year. The participants pay a small fee to support the research (used to offset the personnel costs of the primary researcher) and in return receive access to the reports, which are also made available for a fee to other swana members and the public.
policy development and advocacy - policies are developed and approved by the international board through a process outlined in management policy. Best practice statements, which are often developed in conjunction with other organizations, have considerable input from the international board and technical experts. All are shared on the swana website, through members and with other organizations with which swana has collaborative relationships. This program also provides for communications at the federal, state and provincial governance levels. It assures swana has the opportunity to develop organization positions on developing regulations and legislations where the international board and technical experts deem it necessary. Most recently this happened when swana participated in the development of an industry-wide response to federal rulemaking on new source performance standards related to landfill gas controls.
