Mission: Solar cooking can improve a woman’s health, her children’s health, her household budget, her field’s ability to grow crops, her personal safety, and her educational opportunities. The sun’s free, zero-emissions energy produces no household air pollution, preserving the environment as people cook food and pasteurize drinking water. Solar Cookers International works to improve human health, quality of life, and environments for nearly 3 billion people who cook over open fires by promoting solar thermal cooking technology. We’re distinguished by our projects, partnerships, advocacy and outreach to the global solar cooker community. Support SCI and get involved.

I read about SCI many years ago when it was really just a tiny operation. It seemed so elegantly simple a solution to so many problems in the third world and in the first. They promoted cheap, simple devices that provided clean water and cooking without combustion around the world. In places with growing populations, limited infrastructure and services, low incomes, and lots of refugees SCI was doing something to help immediately. On top of that, solar cookers offer a way for us rich people in the first world to reduce our impact on the planet by cooking with the sun. Over the years, the group has grown some and expanded its reach, but it is still a grass-roots organization with a tiny staff and lots of volunteers. This is probably my favorite non-profit of the number I donate to.

I've been volunteering at Solar Cookers International for five and a half months now. The staff and volunteers welcomed me with open arms. With a small, driven staff, the attention to my needs is a high priority. Everyone constantly makes sure I'm comfortable, and it really feels like home. When I first started volunteering at SCI, I wasn't aware that such a need for solar cooking was out there. Now I feel that I really understand an aspect of the global community that was a mystery to me. I am more than proud to be a part of this organization. Here's to coming up on six months at an organization that makes a huge difference in the quality of life for women and children, the whole world over! ...oh, and solar cooked cookies make a regular appearance, just saying.

This small nonprofit clearly operates on a shoestring but I appreciate the passion that they put into their work! I like the fact that their work benefits several causes-- they help the neediest in developing countries (by providing the poor with a way to save money and time on fuel), safety of women and children (allowing refugees to cook their food instead of endangering themselves gathering wood), health (providing a simple way to sterilize water, and preventing smoke and fire related injuries) AND of course the environment!

I have been donating for 9-10 years and have also bought some items from their shop over the years, such as t-shirts, cookbooks, and a solar oven. All items have arrived in a timely fashion and in good shape. Paperwork was organized and correct. I enjoy their periodic newsletters. Keep up the good work, SCI!

I love this charity - I think of all the time it saves women from having to harvest wood to cook their food. They can also boil water with the solar implements that are lightweight and easy to use. Think of all the trees that are saved! I've been a donor for years because I think this organization DOES THE RIGHT THING. Helping humanity in a very needed way. Thank you SCI. Linda
